The Council on Recovery is Hiring a Director of Accounting Near Houston, TX

Description

Summary:

This position with The Council on Recovery, a nonprofit organization, is responsible for overseeing the general accounting and financial reporting functions and the financial services area including payroll, A/R and A/P. The position is responsible for implementing and maintaining a system of internal controls to ensure that the organization’s assets are adequately safeguarded, that all financial reporting is prepared in compliance with the organization’s financial policies, nonprofit accounting best practices, government agency requirements, and Not-for-profit GAAP. This position is responsible for the oversight and supervision of accounting staff personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the accounting functions, which include but are not limited to, payroll, accounts payable, grant management and reporting, revenue recognition, cash receipts, cost allocations, and asset management.
  • Ensure that accounting policies and procedures are complete and internal controls in place to provide reasonable assurance that the company assets are protected.
  • Ensures that the organization’s financial records are maintained in compliance with company policies and Not-for-profit GAAP. Responsible for reviewing periodic account reconciliations and other records to ensure this compliance.
  • Ensures that the applications used to process and maintain financial and payroll records operate as required and coordinates modification recommendations to ensure accounting requirements continue to be met.
  • Coordinates work relating to government contracts, including the timely preparation and submission of Financial Status Reports, and other funder obligations.
  • Coordinates work related to external audits in the periodic review of the organization’s financial records. Is further responsible for the implementation of agreed upon recommendations and corrective actions, if any, resulting from audit findings.
  • Coordinates efforts to fulfill the financial reporting requirements of the organization. This includes monthly reports to the Officers, Directors and Board of Trustees.
  • Ensures that the accounting department is staffed with qualified financial personnel capable of meeting the objectives and responsibilities noted above. Responsible for continued development of the team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • CPA or related certification preferred
  • Minimum 5-10 years accounting experience that includes nonprofit accounting
  • Prior management experience
  • Demonstrated ability to form, lead and develop an effective team
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departmental functions
  • Detail oriented, critical thinker with a high degree of organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Outlook, Word, and Teams
  • CPA or related certification preferred
  • Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge Software preferred

  • Communicates verbally with management, co-workers and the public in face-to face, one-to-one, and group settings.
  • Regularly uses a telephone for communication.
  • Uses office equipment such as computers, printers, and copiers.
  • Sits for extended time periods.
  • Possesses hearing and vision within normal ranges.
