Work independently with limited supervision to perform all phases of diagnostic procedures, preventative maintenance, service, repair and parts replacement to all types, sizes and classes of municipally owned and operated equipment (diesel and gas) in a timely manner to ensure safe, economical, efficient equipment operation and longevity.

Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.

  • Interact with others in a manner that is professional and inspires open communication.
  • Help to create and maintain a respectful workplace culture and champions diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Participate in citywide training designed to strengthen competencies in areas such as communications, leadership, decision-making and problem solving.

Implement equipment preventative maintenance programs for city-owned equipment including regular equipment servicing, fluid changes, tune-ups, tires and replacement of expendable parts. City equipment includes gasoline cars and pickups, diesel trucks of all sizes; off road construction equipment, including mowers and sidewalk machines; and all small, motorized equipment such as chain saws and weed whips.

  • Schedule individual equipment for regular evaluation to determine the needs for and feasibility of both minor and major repairs.
  • Participate in all phases of equipment problem diagnosis. Performs maintenance and repair work to ensure a “ready status” for all equipment and vehicles and be in compliance with all safety standards.
  • Record parts used and hours worked on all serviced equipment and enter data into electronic work order system. 
  • Monitor and support inventory management, by recording part usage and controlling shop supplies. 

Perform major diagnostic, repair/service work on fuel, hydraulic, electrical, electronic, exhaust, suspension, steering, braking (air/hydraulic/ABS), drive train, air conditioning-heating, and transmission systems.

  • Install electrical and other types of accessories on city equipment.
  • Fabricate parts, mountings, and other accessories using blacksmith, welding, cutting and metal working techniques and practices.

Assist in maintaining a parts inventory and recommends to supervisor parts needed to operate equipment center efficiently.

  • Order parts from various vendors, as needed.
  • Recommend to supervisor specialized repairs needed so units can be taken to proper vendor.

Participate in local workshops for updates and certifications in the field of equipment service.

  • Provide information as to new developments and innovations in equipment maintenance that could benefit city operations.

Maintain work area and tools in clean and workable fashion.

  • Periodically evaluates condition of tools from safety perspective and recommends appropriate action to supervisor.

Maintain positive and effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, suppliers the general public.

Perform related work in any division, (i.e., snow plowing) to meet the city’s goals and objectives and any and all work as apparent or assigned.

  • Assist with training of other employees on safe use of and transporting of vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist with OSHA compliance policies pertaining to equipment/vehicle and an equipment repair center.

 Perform or assist in other duties and responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to perform in accordance with the City of Plymouth’s CIVIC values (customer focus, integrity, visionary, inclusion and connection) and comfort with supporting and advancing the city council’s strategic priorities.
  • Minimum of two years of training or experience including but not limited to repairing and maintaining automotive, light truck, heavy truck, construction equipment, mowing and snow removal equipment, and small engines.
  • Must have a valid Minnesota driver's license and must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License Class A within six months of hire.

Desired Qualifications

  • Completion of a two-year vocational-technical program in automotive and/or light and heavy truck and/or heavy equipment repair.
  • ASE certification in major system maintenance.
  • DOT Certified for annual mandatory inspections.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Job activities very frequently required to perform the job include standing, sitting (test driving) walking, lifting, pushing/pulling objects in the course of making repairs, carrying, climbing, bending at waist, reaching (extending hands and arms in any direction), handling objects (grasping, turning or otherwise using hands or hand), repetitive hand motion, use of arm muscles over extended periods, use of leg muscles over extended periods.
  • Job activities usually required to perform the job include kneeling (bending leg at knee and resting on knee), crawling (moving about on hands and knees), crouching (bending at knees), overhead work (over shoulder height or work on steering and suspension components), stationary desk or bench work with neck bent forward.
  • The employee must be able to lift/carry items weighing from 0 – 100 pounds. Items may be lifted from 0 – 6 feet and carried from 0 – 50 feet. Employee must be able to lift/carry items such as mechanical tools including air tools, starters, alternators, rims and tires, hydraulic cylinders, cutting edges for snowplows, mounting tires, and parts for heavy repair on larger on equipment. Employees must be able to unload parts or other materials required for repair. 
  • Job Requires working outdoors in various weather conditions to complete repair; working indoors; operating forklifts, machinery, or vehicles; working with chemicals; working near fumes and/or vapors; and driving a city vehicle or personal vehicle to perform job duties.
