The University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cance Center (UMGCCC) is accepting nominations/applications for co-leader of the UMGCCC Hormone Responsive Cancers (HRC) Program. The HRC Program is one of five research programs within UMGCCC including, Experimental Therapeutics, Tumor Immunology & Immunotherapy, Molecular and Structural Biology, and Population Science.

The co-leader should ideally be an NIH funded investigator, at the associate professor level or above. The co-leader will be a member of UMGCCC senior leadership team and will join an in-place co-leader with expertise translational research and clinical trials to jointly lead the HRC program. The co-leader position carries significant leadership responsibilities within UMGCCC.

The ideal candidate will:

Have an established track record of peer-reviewed extramural research funding and national/international reputation as evidenced by service on national, regional, and local organizations and societies. Possess strategic and innovative thinking abilities to identify research gaps and anticipate research directions and opportunities. Have exceptional leadership and mentorship skills to advance careers of faculty, trainees, and staff. Foster awareness and support of cancer center initiatives to support inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, and cancer health equity efforts throughout the institution. Have excellent oral and written communication skills. In accordance with NCI guidelines, responsibilities of the co-leader include effective scientific leadership that provides intellectual stimulation, cohesion, focus, and direction and promotes research that has a high degree of clinical, scientific, and/or policy impact; stimulation of interactions within the Program, with other Research Programs at the (Cancer) Center, and with researchers at other institutions that lead to collaborative research projects, joint publications, colloquia, joint seminar series, and other evidence of meaningful interchange around related or common goals; and exercise good judgement in use of funds to support these and other scientific activities

The Hormone Related Cancer (HRC) Program was established to probe the common biology between malignancies of the breast and prostate gland. These malignancies, the most common in women and men respectively, are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Investigators at UMGCCC have made key contributions to understanding hormone-related cancers, and these contributions have led to practice-changing discoveries, such as the development of the first aromatase inhibitors.

As major disparities exist in the incidence and outcome of hormone-related cancers in different populations, an overarching goal of the HRC Program and UMGCCC is to identify and reduce these disparities. The HRC Program addresses this through the design of clinical trials that reflect the high breast and prostate cancer prevalence in UMGCCC's catchment area and through translational studies that examine cancer subtypes that contribute to overall cancer disparities.

In pursuit of its scientific goals to reduce morbidity and mortality from hormone-related cancers, the HRC Program's investigations focus on three themes:

* Therapeutic strategies against hormone-related tumors - Identify new agents to target malignancies that remain related to hormone manipulation. Mechanisms of innate and acquired hormone resistance - Identify and target the mechanisms that confer de novo or acquire resistance to hormone manipulation. Invasion and metastasis - Identify the mechanisms that promote tumor dissemination and the therapeutic strategies that target these mechanisms.

The HRC Research Program includes researchers from the University of Maryland Baltimore the University of Maryland College Park, and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Cancer researchers with diverse expertise from these institutions work together to further the mission of UMGCCC.

The successful candidate will be appointed at an academic level commensurate with his/her training and experience to a school and department in the University System of Maryland.
