The Broad Institute, Inc. is Hiring an UI/UX Designer Near Cambridge, MA

Job Description The Pattern (pattern.broadinstitute.org) group at Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard focuses on the design and development of visualization tools to help researchers discover, explore and explain insights. We’re looking for a full-time designer who is excited to use their skills to create effective visual designs that will drive biomedical science forward. We’re a fast-paced team that works on a variety of projects including data portals with interactive data visualization, exploratory web apps, interactive visual explainers, and mobile applications. If you like to solve visual problems, we have them! This is a perfect position for a designer who is mission-driven with passion for and curiosity about biomedical science. You will be a key member of a vibrant and creative team, and take part in collaborations with researchers, software engineers, and other designers. You will participate in an iterative design process in efforts to identify important scientific goals and lead ideation and concept development sessions. You should possess excellent graphic, web and screen design skills, and have a solid grasp of data visualization and interaction design principles for desktop and mobile formats. Key Responsibilities Bring ideas and innovative design solutions. Lead meetings with collaborators to learn about their science, define aims and the scope of work for the collaboration, create use cases, identify user personas, and design main functionality and features for products. Lead projects by setting milestones and organizing and leading design reviews with collaborators. Collaborate with software engineers, researchers and designers to explore and iteratively refine design solutions, producing sketches, workflow diagrams, and wireframes for data-intensive digital products Partner with team members and collaborators to explore and find effective data visualization solutions Produce high-fidelity clickable mockups, ensuring design objectives are clearly communicated to the development team. Communicate with developers to ensure design ideas are technically practical. Meet project milestones and deadlines. Demonstrate ability to manage multiple projects by focusing on one project while keeping track of others. Demonstrate competence and confidence to carry out tasks independently. Keep up on design trends, best practices, existing solutions, standards protocol, spectrum of needs and the problems to be solved. Potential Additional Activities Conceive and create illustrations and graphics to accurately and effectively communicate scientific concepts and results for publications Produce various collateral materials in support projects undertaken by Pattern such as infographics and scientific figures Present work at conferences, internal and external meetings, annual retreat. Qualifications Required Portfolio demonstrating relevant experience Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a design field OR equivalent experience in UI/UX design Excellent problem-solving skills Strong verbal and visual communication skills using a variety of methods to convey ideas and concepts (e.g., storytelling, storyboards, clickable mockups, mood boards, prototypes, etc.) Ability to demonstrate thorough rationale for your design decisions and show how value was added in your designs Critical thinking skills with an open mind to alternative solutions Ability to see the value of utility and practical solutions but with a tendency to think outside of the box for more effective solutions than the status quo Ability to thrive in iterative design process while maintaining strong organizational and time management skills Proficiency in industry standard UI/UX tools such as Figma or XD and knowledgeable in Adobe Creative suite Expert knowledge of graphic design and information design principles Ability to work independently and as part of a team Preferred Some background or experience in biomedical sciences Heightened attention to detail, taking pride in ownership and responsibility for your work Experience designing digital products for scientific fields 3 years of post-undergraduate work or equivalent experience Working knowledge of HTML, CSS flex and grid, and responsive layout design.
