TESLA is Hiring a Sr Quality Engineer, Cell Cal-Lam Near Colton, TX

The Role:

Tesla is looking for a highly motivated Quality Engineer to support quality assurance, inspection, root cause analysis, critical Li-ion cell component analysis, and data analysis in both manufacturing and lab environments for our cutting-edge Tesla Cell Manufacturing Line.

The Battery is one of the most complex and challenging components designed and manufactured at Tesla. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Tesla's world-class manufacturing facilities. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work on a critical subsystem of an incredibly exciting product.

The Quality Engineer will lead mass production cell projects that impact cell quality, Tesla manufacturability, safety, cost, and field reliability while working in a cross-functional team throughout the entire product lifecycle and launch into manufacturing. You will guide design decisions, contribute to specification requirements and collaborate on cell material and process development projects. You will work closely with Design Engineering, Process, Equipment, and Production teams to take battery design changes and new battery designs from initial concept through prototype development and into full production.

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with Product Design, Equipment Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Safety, Production, Maintenance and other cross-functional teams as the cell quality expert to ensure production lines are designed and operated to produce high quality, high performance cells.
  • Define and establish incoming, in process and outgoing quality control tasks to ensure manufacturing capability and product reliability
  • Manage non-conforming cell process flows and evaluate suspect materials while working closely with internal and external teams to quickly identify and resolve any cell-related issues
  • Lead the identification, root cause analysis, and resolution of cell-related manufacturing quality issues
  • Define containment and disposition criteria based on quality requirements
  • Plan and participate in audits of Tesla and supplier manufacturing lines to ensure all processes follow the plan of record
  • Drive cross-functional projects with manufacturing, supply chain, production quality, and research teams to test existing and determine new product specifications and tolerances
  • Collaborate with suppliers to initiate and implement Process Change Requests (PCRs) to improve manufacturability and field performance
  • Seek out and initiate continuous improvement projects within Tesla manufacturing and at suppliers
  • Lead FMEA activities to ensure design and manufacturing issues are identified and risks mitigated
  • Provide Design for Manufacturability (DFM) feedback to engineering as well as participate in DFM reviews
  • Produce cogent and intelligible data visualizations
  • Author presentations and summarize high-impact technical findings
  • Develop custom test methods to solve critical cell engineering issues
  • Anticipate potential problems and take preventative action
  • Proven innovative thinker
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them towards manufacturing quality

Requirements:

  • Experience with Roll to Roll coating, Toll coating, Laminating and slitting with a high level of tolerances on the micron scale is a plus, but not required.
  • Experience with ergonomic process design, part variation control, and human factors effects on product
  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemical manufacturing, roll winding and conveyance, calendaring, and lamination equipment. Systems utilizing mixers, pumps, hydraulics, hot oil, high torque rotating equipment, lifting and rigging, large bearing block rebuilding, is highly desirable.
  • Prefer winding and conveyance experience in roll goods industries such as paper/film manufacturing where coating, calendaring, winding, and slitting are key process steps in the manufacturing process
  • NPI experience transitioning products from prototype to production
  • Experience introducing new equipment and new processes into a production environment
  • Strong project management experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Experience creating various reports and database tools for management
  • Ability to use technological tools and business system applications to manage, synthesize and interpret data
  • Experience working with domestic/international vendors on technical projects
  • Structured problems solving methodologies (DMAIC, 8D, etc)

Desirable Experience:

  • Programming (SQL, Python, MATLAB, R, etc.)
  • Familiarity with lab material characterization techniques
  • Data analysis and visualization software (Tableau, JMP, Minitab, etc.)
  • Design software (Adobe Creative Suite, CATIA. SOLIDWORKS)
  • Green belt or Black belt Six Sigma or Lean Six Sigma Certification
