Talbot County Government is Hiring a Correctional Officer I Near Easton, MD

POSITION TITLE: Corrections Officer (trainee)

CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt

DEPARTMENT: Department of Corrections

POSITION REPORTING: Corporal

SALARY: Trainee - $40,601/Certified - $42,747

LAST UPDATE: 1/2023

SUMMARY: A Correctional Officer Trainee will be responsible to assist with the maintenance of security and control of adult offenders in a correctional center in accordance with State and Federal standards by providing for the safe, secure, humane and constitutional incarceration of those inmates and arrestees lawfully committed to the Talbot County Detention Center.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

· Maintains security over inmates in cells and showers and observes inmates to detect or prevent disturbances, introduction of contraband or escape.

· Conducts cell count and inspects inmates for personal cleanliness.

· Ensures inmates comply with other rules of the Talbot County Department of Corrections

· Escorts inmates throughout the facility; provides security when necessary to enforce conduct rules.

· Assigns and oversees the work of inmates and trustees engaged in routine cleaning and laboring operations.

· Checks inmates into facility; records personal items received from inmates; pat and strip searches inmates; issues clothes to inmates.

· Patrols assigned area regularly; checking locks, windows, security and lights.

· Provides security at doors, etc. to prevent escapes and to regulate the admission of visitors to the facility

· Performs other related duties as required and/or as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED

Be at least 18 years of age

Have no criminal history, have no significant history of illicit drug use

Must possess a valid Maryland Driver’s License.

Ability to learn and enforce a variety of Departmental rules, regulations and disciplinary measures.

Ability to supervise the activities of inmates and trustees carrying out assigned tasks.

Ability to act quickly, appropriately and calmly in an emergency.

Ability to carry out detailed orders.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates and other staff.

Ability to accomplish the responsibilities of the position.

Ability to use force, as necessary, to enforce rules, quell disturbances, gain control, protect property, and prevent injury to self and/or others.

Demonstrate the ability to write an acceptable report in accordance with established policy.

Pre-employment drug screening and random employment drug testing are required.

Newly hired officers must pass a physical examination, a psychological screening and must successfully complete the Correctional Officer Academy and be certified as a correctional officer by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.

Certification must be maintained throughout employment as a Correctional Officer.

Failure to successfully complete any of the aforementioned mandates will result in termination.

Note: Upon appointment, selected candidate is required to successfully complete the MD Police/Correctional Officer Academy to remain employed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Performs strenuous and physically demanding command and control activities while wearing certain equipment such as a gas mask, protective helmet and protective vest. This activity may be conducted over extended periods of time and involve standing, walking, marching, running, stretching and crawling.

Employs chemical weapons in confined and open spaces. Withstand exposure to CN and/or CS gas with and without protective masks.

Uses physical self-defense and control tactics including Arm Locks, Wrist Locks, Come - along and Disarming Techniques.

Performs CPR and First Aid according to the ASHI standards for certification – must be able to use full body to give chest compressions and deliver first-aid techniques.

Other physical activity including running and fast walking may be required to meet all of the regulations of the Maryland Public Safety Training Commission.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The noise level in this environment is usually moderate to loud.
