Emergency Department Director

Chief Nursing Officer

Department: Emergency Department (ED)

Summary/Objective:

The Registered Nurse (RN) will be clinically competent while delivering care to patients in an Emergency Department utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation and evaluation. RNs will effectively interact with patients, physicians, significant others and other health team members while maintaining all standards of professional nursing. RN will collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary team; providing physical and psychological support to patients. Promotes and restores patients’ health by completing nursing process

Essential Functions:

  1. Demonstrate appropriate assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the patient's care, as evidenced by client/staff observation and respond appropriately.
  2. Assess the patient: collect and document the patient's current health status and medical history. 
  3. Complete and/or review Admission Data Record as defined by policy. 
  4. Make accurate assessment of patient's status and respond appropriately.
  5. Give a thorough, concise report at change of shift. Communicate pertinent information to the appropriate person in a timely manner.
  6. Demonstrate accurate and timely documentation according to form guidelines.
  7. Demonstrate correct and safe technique in the use of equipment according to specific product information.
  8. Follow appropriate procedure for obtaining and returning or cleaning/disposing of equipment and supplies.
  9. Participate in economical utilization of supplies and ensure that equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner. 
  10. Adhere to administrative system/nursing service policies as evidenced by Policies and Procedures.
  11. Ability to care for patients with PICC lines, Central Lines and PIV’s
  12. Must be able to monitor telemetry patients, and recognize lethal arrhythmias.
  13. Must administer and be current, confident and knowledgeable of medications based on age and clinical condition of patient.
  14. Remain conscientious in regard to personal hygiene and comply with specific division/unit regulations.
  15. Attend 50 % of General Monthly Nurses Meetings as well as Departmental meetings.
  16. Comply with specific system/division/unit policy and procedure concerning safety including all aspects of patient care in an Emergency Department that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Always support and maintain a culture of safety and quality.
  17. Collaborate with other nurses and health team members to ensure the patient's wellbeing as evidenced by staff/client feedback.
  18. Maintain positive working relationships within the department as well as other departments and physicians 
  19. Ability to work in a stressful environment successfully by maintaining composure and professionalism.

5. Age specific requirements: Demonstrates the ability to work with patients in the group specific to the environment of care as necessary.

Depending on the environment of care, the following age groups are considered: 

  • infancy ( birth to 12months ) 
  • toddler ( 1-4 years )
  • preschool ( 4-6 years ) 
  • school age ( 6-12 years ) 
  • adolescence ( 12-18 years )
  • early adult ( 18-44 years ) 
  • middle adult ( 44-59 years )
  • late adult ( 60 years and beyond )

Additional Annual Competencies at the discretion of the Director of Emergency Department

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position can be assigned as Charge Nurse at which time will supervise other RN’s, LVN’s, CNA’s, Nursing and Paramedic Students.

Work Environment:

Emergency Department consists of work area and patient rooms that are well-lit and ventilated. May be exposed to communicable diseases. May experience traumatic and stressful situations, including psychiatric, dismembered and deceased patients. 

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described as follows are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires intermittent physical activity, endurance, ability to assist, lift and support patients. Duties regularly require standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, pushing, pulling and crouching as well as lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs. 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Position requires work schedule flexibility based on needs of the hospital which can sometimes require weekends and holidays. 

Requirements

Required Education, Experience and License

Current RN nursing license from the State of Texas or Compact state, in pursuit of Texas license.

Current BLS. Course must be AHA accredited.

Current ACLS. Course must be AHA accredited.

Current TNCC. Course must be AHA accredited.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

PALS within 12 months of hire. Course must be AHA accredited.

Successful completion of arrhythmia course.
