Stillwater County is Hiring an Accountant Near Columbus, MT

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION: Under general direction performs a variety of accounting duties in accordance with county policies; work is performed in conformity with statutory requirements; work varies, requiring individual judgment within statutory standards and procedures.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Duties require some limited physical movement of lifting up to 25#’s (greater with assistance), prolonged sitting, climbing, walking, bending, and stooping;
  • Work is performed in an office where conditions are controllable;
  • Must possess a valid Montana Operator’s license.

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:

  • Position is responsible for the preparation and issuance of bi-weekly payroll;
  • Assists with the maintenance of employee attendance records;
  • Reviews time sheets, work charts, wage computations, and other information to detect and reconcile payroll discrepancies to ensure County employees are paid in accordance with policy and law;
  • Reconciles, prepares and distributes payroll liability payments, including IRS and State withholding payments and health insurance;
  • Reconciles and prepares quarterly reports due to Federal and State governments;
  • Reconciles and prepares annual Forms W2 and Forms 1095;
  • Assists in processing and maintaining employee benefit paperwork for payroll and benefit purposes;
  • Performs government accounting work involving financial controls and functions including assisting with budget development;
  • Prepares Annual Financial Report (State Requirement) for review by Finance Director;
  • Prepares audit schedules in formats requested by independent auditing firm;
  • Prepares Annual Financial Statements, footnotes and required supplementary information within the audited financial statements (for auditor) for review by Finance Director;
  • Provides technical accounting assistance to County department staff;
  • Prepares journal entries to maintain generic ledger, special ledgers and other accounting records;
  • Position requires frequent contact with fellow employees and the public with the need to communicate orally and in writing and where tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality are required;
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.

SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS: None

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required, plus Two (2) years of demonstrated general office experience with two (2) years of comprehensive payroll experience required; Governmental accounting experience preferred; Computer experience (Excel, Word, and Outlook) required;
  • Must possess a valid Montana Operator’s License.
