This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).
New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

Description of Job

About the Work Unit
This position works in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Flexible Pavement Laboratory. The work unit exists to test Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and to ensure that the quality of materials being sold to the state by contractors is adequate for the pavement design life.
About the Position
The Engineering Physical Science Technician I provides technical assistance to the Flexible Pavement Lab by implementing proper test procedures, operating lab equipment, recording test results and submitting test results to engineering support staff.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs intermediate Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) testing in the Flexible Pavement Unit as prescribed by the Colorado Procedures (CDOT Field Materials Manual and CDOT Laboratory Manual of Test Procedures).
  • Performs the following tests CP-L 5106 (Hveem Stability), CP-L 5115 (Density of specimens compacted by the SuperPave Gyratory Compactor), and CP-L 5109 (Resistance of Bituminous Mixture to Moisture Induced Damaged).
  • Utilizes Vacuum Pumps, Mechanical Splitters, Mechanical Shakers, Mechanical Washer, Ignition Ovens, Stabilometers, and Gyratory Compactors.
  • Receives and logs samples such as the 10K, RAP, and Correction Factor samples.
  • Enters test results into LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) and ensures that results meet the specifications and are in tolerance with other test data.
  • Checks statewide CDOT laboratory testing equipment during the annual lab inspections and as requested by the region labs.
  • Maintains, repairs and calibrates Flexible Pavement testing equipment as required.
  • Maintains calibration records in accordance to AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) R18.
  • Assists with annual inspections of CDOT regional materials labs once a year.
  • Performs AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory testing.
  • Performs Hot Mix Asphalt Round Robin sample setups, testing, and reporting of test results.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
  • Primarily work hours 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Monday-Friday;
  • Daytime travel during business hours to pick up lab supplies/lab samples and attend CAPA to assist in proctoring;
  • Overnight travel one week per year to assist with the Annual Region Lab inspections;
  • Travels 2 days a year to assist in gathering Round Robin Hot Mix Asphalt samples;
  • Exerts up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently to move objects;
  • Exposure to nonweather-related hot and cold temperatures;
  • Contact with water or other liquids; or exposure to nonweather-related humid conditions;
  • Exposure to conditions such as fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation;
  • Proximity to moving, mechanical parts;
  • Exposure to radiant energy;
  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals;
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • AND four (4) years of experience monitoring construction projects, conducting or assisting with materials testing, or inspecting construction projects. One year of the experience must have been assisting with, or conducting materials testing.
Substitution: Satisfactory completion of course work from an accredited, non-correspondence college or university appropriate to the assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required general experience. If using this substitution you must submit a transcript with your online application.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must obtain LABCAT Level ABC certifications within 6 months of hire.

  • A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
Preferred Qualifications
Theexceptional applicantwill be an experienced technician with proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;
  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
  • Familiarity or experience with the CDOT Field Materials Manual and the Laboratory Manual of Test Procedures;
  • Knowledge and experience with hot mix asphalt testing;
  • Familiarity with AASHTO standards;
  • Familiarity with inspecting, calibrating, and maintaining testing equipment;
  • Familiarity with, or experience using Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS);
  • Excellent reasoning, analytical, and problem solving ability;
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills;
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations;
  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment;
  • Strong time management skills;
  • Adaptability;
  • Ability to organize, analyze, and interpret numerical data;
  • Commitment to safety;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Fluency in MS Office Suite skills (Word, Excel), Gmail, SAP, and the ability to quickly learn new software.
