JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Emergency Technician/Unit Clerk DEPARTMENT: Emergency Department REPORTS: Nurse Manager/Medical Director JOB SUMMARY The Emergency Department Technician/Unit Clerk anticipates and implements patient and health care team needs and functions as an integral part of the ED patient care team. The Emergency Technician/Unit Clerk is responsible for patient care, transportation, participating in planning, completing patient registration and financial verification, recognition of changes and communication to other healthcare team members. Updates computer with notes, signatures and verification of insurance’s for all incoming Emergency Department patients. The Emergency Technician/Unit Clerk will be responsible for completing all of the department’s clerical functions including transferring and admitting patients. The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position. WORK PERFORMED JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Responds to medical emergencies, and to critical patient situations. 2. Performs clinical procedures within scope of practice. 3. Performs EKG’s, glucometry, phlebotomy, point of care testing, and collects/sends specimens. Performs quality control checks as appropriate. 4. Participates in creation of treatment plan as overseen by the CC/RN. Communicates new orders, change in patient’s condition and unit concerns with the unit based team. 5. Assists with receiving walk in and EMS delivered ED patients and anticipates needs according to chief complaint. 6. Orders and restocks unit supplies as needed. 7. Performs 1:1 watches as assigned. 8. Assists with gynecological exams. 9. Applies, maintains and removes immobilization devices prn. Maintains competency with specialty trauma equipment. 10. Participates in unit based disaster drills and preparedness; able to respond to disaster situations. Maintains excellent rapport with EMS. 11. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information. 12. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements. 14. Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external). 15. Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety. 16. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices. 17. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code. 18. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated. 19. Performs hazardous patient decontamination procedures. Identifies hazards, selects proper personal protective equipment (including respiratory protection), sets up appropriate decontamination systems, removes contaminated clothing from patients, and contains contaminated wastes for proper disposal. 20. Maintain an accurate registration process and keeps up with work flow despite interruptions. Responsible for collecting patient out-of-pocket liability at the point of service. Consults with and keeps unit manager informed of activities, needs, and problems related to the registration/unit clerk department. Advise different departments of revisions on registered patients. 21. Perform tasks such as the following: act as receptionist: greet all persons, answer inquiries, direct and assist them, take and relay messages and run errands for floor personnel. Answer telephone, as needed, in a timely manner and operate pager, attend station and direct traffic during emergencies. 22. Perform clerical duties related to all Emergency Department patients. Notify appropriate departments of patient disposition; assemble and prepare appropriate charts and forms. Ensure that patient valuables and personal items are properly handled and accounted for. Prepare all charge slips as necessary. Prepare computer billing/charging as appropriate. 23. Performs designated duties during a fire code, Code Blue, etc. as per utilization of SIMPLEX alarm system and page in a clear, distinct and audible voice. 24. Ask patients, over 18 years old, if they have Advance Directives and documented information correctly. 25. Responds to trauma alerts and performs as a member of the trauma team. 26. Transports trauma patient to and from diagnostic testing areas and inpatient units. OTHER FUNCTIONS: 1. Other related duties as assigned. PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Sit up to 2 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Stand for up to 12 hours per day; 8 hours at a time. Walk up to 12 hours per day; 10 minutes at a time. Consistently lift, carry, and push objects up to 10 pounds. Transport patients weighing up to 250 lbs via wheelchair, bed and/or stretcher. Frequently stoop and bend and reach above shoulder level. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, and high/low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision. POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS: Cuts; punctures; confinement to small spaces; slippery surfaces, assault and battery, radiation, chemical and biohazardous exposure, injuries from operating equipment and machinery, burns, and back injuries; inhalation injuries; exposure to violent situations. Employees who work in patient care areas where they may have potential exposure to patients with suspected or proven tuberculosis (TB) must have the ability to wear a particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from the CDC (enforced by OSHA) or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear a particulate respirator. SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE: Lead aprons for radiation exposure; follow MSDS and OSHA requirements for exposure to biological and chemical hazards. MOST COMPLEX DUTY: 1. Response to critical medical and trauma situations. 2. Provision of direct patient care. 3. Ability to prioritize duties and function as a team member. SUPERVISION (RECEIVED BY AND/OR GIVEN TO): Supervised by Patient Care Manager and Clinical Coordinator; patient care is directed by the primary nurse. COMMUNICATIONS: Must be able to communicate with all internal and external customers, departments, patients, families, and coworkers in a courteous/professional manner. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Maintains responsibility for own development through active participation in in-services and or continuing education programs. QUALIFICATIONS) (MINIMUM) EDUCATION: 1. High school education or equivalent. 2. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: 1. CPR certification required within one month of hire. 2.
