St. Lukes Hospital is Hiring a Speech Language Pathologist - PRN/Days (PT) Near Columbus, NC

St. Luke’s Hospital has a new opportunity for an experienced Speech Language Pathologist for the Speech Therapy Department! Our hospital is one of very few critical access hospitals in the country that earned 5-Stars in patient satisfaction from CMS in 2020 and we need YOU to help us get to the next level! Provides assessment and treatment of speech, language, and swallowing disorders in patients, whether pediatric, adult, or geriatric, in accordance with ASHA standards. The services provided by the Speech Language Pathologist include, but are not limited to, direct patient care for inpatients and out-patients, patient and family instruction/education, consultation and hospital services. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults.
Essential Functions:
  • Follow a written patient care plan and make modifications of treatment that are consistent with the plan to assure that proper treatment is given.
  • Provide treatment using established techniques to assure that the patient benefit is maximized and safe.
  • Recognize and report changes in patient status so that treatment can be adjusted appropriately.
  • Recognize contraindications for treatment to assure patient safety.
  • Communicate patient status to the appropriate person(s) so that those involved in the patients care and discharge plans will have necessary information.
  • Write progress notes so that patient’s treatment and status are documented accurately.
  • Write and instruct home programs to assure that discharge plans are complete.
  • Assign work to and supervise Rehab Tech and students to ensure that they function within the limits of their skills and knowledge.
  • Utilize proper body mechanics in order to avoid injury.
  • Transfer and transport patients in a manner that assures safety for both patient and self.
  • Complete department records and charges in a manner that assures accuracy and timeliness.
  • Contribute to the departmental improvement initiatives through participation in monitoring and evaluation activities.
  • Maintain the department in an orderly manner by cleaning and storing equipment per procedure or assisting the Rehab Tech in these duties.
  • Assist in maintaining the department in readiness for patient care by assuring adequate supplies and preparing treatment areas for the next patient promptly.
  • Assists with ensuring that patient appointments are scheduled so that patient waiting time is minimal and staff work time is coordinated efficiently.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of all hospital and department safety, maintenance, disaster, and infection control policies and procedures to assure a safe working environment.
  • Perform administrative tasks as assigned by the Director of Rehabilitation Services in order to assist in the overall operations of the department.
  • Present and attend in-service education programs in order to increase knowledge base.
  • Assists with data collection and evaluation as needed.
  • Implements and coordinates intervention plan.
  • Provides direct service that follows a documented routine and accepted procedure.
  • Adapts intervention environment, tools, materials, and activities according to the needs of the individual and his or her socio-cultural context.
  • Communicates and interacts with other team members and the individual's family or caregivers .
  • Monitors own performance and identifies supervisory needs.
  • Maintains records and documentation required by work settings.
  • Selects, adapts, and implements intervention.
  • Modifies treatment approaches to reflect changing needs.
  • Formulates discontinuation and follow-up plans.
  • Provides Speech Therapy services to patients under the appropriate guidelines established by ASHA.
  • Conducts SLP screening of patients to determine need for intervention/treatment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, skills and abilities: (Not an inclusive list)
  • Must have experience/working knowledge of performing and interpreting Modified Barium Swallow Study evaluations.
  • Master's Degree in Speech/Language Pathology from an accredited University is required.
  • Must hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
  • Must have current State licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Speech and Language Pathologists.
  • Must maintain current CPR certification
  • Educated on and compliant with HIPAA regulations; maintains strict confidentiality of client information.
  • Complies with Infection Control, Standard Precautions and OSHA standards for the healthcare professional. 
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment (e.g., face mask, goggles, latex/non-latex gloves) as needed.
  • Ability to work effectively within role independently and with other team members.
  • Ability to organize and complete work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to read, write and effectively communicate in English.
  • Ability to understand medical/surgical terminology.
