St. Joseph's Addiction Treatment and Recovery Centers

Location: Rose Hill Adolescent Treatment Program - Massena, NY

Position: Full-time Counselor (CASAC or CASAC-T preferred)

Schedule/Shift: Tuesday-Saturday / 3:00p-11:00p

Position Summary: Incumbent of this position will perform a wide variety of tasks and activities directly concerned with the effective operation of the therapeutic schedule. Primary Counselors are characterized by the degree of professionalism that is normally associated with counseling and a higher level of accreditation. Individuals occupying positions at this level are expected to train and/or supervise those designated by the Clinical Supervisor. Their primary focus is to work effectively with the clinical team to provide individualized treatment for each patient. This will increase the effectiveness of the treatment component. The incumbent of this position may be required to work extended hours in order to fulfill clinical goals and objectives.

Education and Training: Master's Degree, preferably in the behavioral health or social science field, with adequate emphasis on counseling; and two years or experience in human services work providing direct patient service with one-year supervisory experience; or Credentialed Chemical Dependency Counselor, (example CASAC) with a Bachelor's degree in behavioral health or social science field; and two years of experience in related field with one year of direct supervision; or Credentialed Chemical Dependency Counselor, (example CASAC) with an Associate's degree in behavioral health or social science field; and four years of experience in related field with direct supervision; or three years of direct experience counseling chemically dependent youth with the understanding that credentialing and education be pursued.

Physical Demands: No extraordinary physical demands required.

Working Knowledge of:

  • Adolescent behavior and development
  • Adolescent chemical abuse/dependency
  • Therapeutic method and theory of counseling
  • Social Services, Probation Department, Outpatient clinics, both Mental Health and Chemical Dependency facilities and Psy. Hospitals

Ability to:

  • Counsel on all levels, i.e., group, individual and family dimensions
  • Communicate with patients, staff, and other referral agencies in the written and oral modes
  • Work with other staff in a supervisory role
  • Maintain a professional image (role model) among patients, colleagues, and outside agencies
  • Motivate patients in adopting positive values and behavioral patterns
  • Listen, understand, and appreciate the worth/value of patients by treating them with respect and dignity
  • Deal with self-prejudice by not letting it interfere in relationships with patient and staff.

Serves as a primary counselor to 1-6 individual patients' which entails, but is not limited to:

  • Completion of biopsychosocial
  • Creation of individualized treatment plan
  • Meet for recommended one-on-one sessions
  • Meet for recommended/assigned group and family sessions
  • Ensure patient's charts are in proper order and accurately documented
  • Participate in and formulate discharge plans.

Attends scheduled clinical meetings to ensure appropriate treatment. Those meetings include, but are not limited to:

  • Weekly staff meetings to present progress of individual patient and to gain insight from other members.
  • Weekly counselor meetings for the purpose of setting goals and critiquing clinical structure.
  • Assist in the development of lecture series for the treatment schedule.
  • Provide supervision/training to all assigned staff and at all times to instill a sense of professionalism that will result in all staff adopting and integrating a professional attitude in a manner consistent with program’s goal.
  • Work closely with the Program Supervisor to address any clinical needs which arise in the setting.
  • The incumbent of this position is not limited to the aforementioned duties, they may vary from time to time based upon the needs for facility and supervisor.
