St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Distribution Systems Operator Trainee for our well established Utility Department whose headquarters are located in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

This position is responsible for assisting in the installation, maintenance and repair of transmission, distribution and collection systems. The work consists of related maintenance duties. Hazardous working conditions contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance of water and wastewater system facilities and components. Success in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of water and wastewater utilities.

Examples of Duties:

Some of the major duties include but are not limited to:

  • Excavates and trenches in order to make taps and repairs.
  • Assists in the installation of water and sewer service connections.
  • Repairs broken water and sewer lines.
  • Operates vacuum truck to remove grease and grit from manholes.
  • Assists with correctly identifying utility locates.
  • TV inspection of sewer lines.
  • Operates and maintains assigned equipment.
  • Performs general janitorial and yard duties at maintenance facility.
  • Responds to after-hours work requests and emergencies on a rotational on-call basis, as needed.
  • Maintains a full time presence on the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications:

Candidates for the Distribution Systems Operator Trainee are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Experience sufficient to perform the major duties of this position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for less than one year, preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class “A” CDL Driver License with “N” (tanker) Endorsement.
  • An incumbent will be placed at a pay grade 10 for a period not to exceed six months or until receipt of a valid Florida Class “A” CDL Driver License with “N” (tanker) Endorsement
  • Must possess and maintain certification by the State of Florida as Distribution Systems Operator III within two (2) years of hire.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.
