Description

Job Summary

Responsibility to direct, plan, control and implement engineering activities & solutions related to new product introduction, manufacturing footprint, automation and sustaining engineering activities in US and MX locations in accordance with key business goals and strategies.

Job Responsibilities

New Product Introduction

  • Collaborates with Product Engineering Management & Engineers to design, develop and implement manufacturing systems to execute multiple product concepts and major product enhancements.
  • Directs team of process / equipment and industrial engineers to deliver turnkey lean manufacturing system designs that excel in the areas of safety, quality, capacity, flexibility, balance, and flow.
  • Specifies, procures, and delivers key capital equipment including commissioning, training, maintenance programs, spare parts, etc. in accordance with business goals and strategies.
  • Directs engagement with supply chain partners in Plant operations & engineering teams on process development and design enhancement
  • Evaluates proposals, hires, and supervises external design and engineering firms against project schedule, budget, and design criteria.
  • Leads and executes 3P workshops to enhance product designs to simplify manufacturability of products to improve quality, delivery, and costs.
  • Provides oversight and routine review of team and individual project progress.
  • Participates directly in project work and timeline management with accountability for key engineering deliverables.

Manufacturing Footprint

  • Develops business cases and financial models to provide clear insights on optimal & redundant manufacturing footprint by product line in accordance with business strategies and goals
  • Develops and implements manufacturing capability to insource supplier purchased components in accordance with business strategies and goals
  • Leads and coordinates activities related to new & existing facility lease management & execution.
  • Engages supply chain partners to locate and execute new footprint solutions to support vendor managed inventory, local, lean & aligned strategies
  • Develops and drives project execution through the use project planning tools including timelines, activities & key milestones, owners, etc. to communicate clear status and risks to senior management
  • Develops and plans short and long-term goals in accordance with business strategies and goals.
  • Prepares, submits, controls, and monitors departmental capital and operating budgets.
  • Prepares and issues required reports, summaries, and presentations related to engineering activities.

Automation & Plant Support

  • Develop automation roadmap and execution plans to reduce high manual work content in key product lines for all manufacturing locations to include capital and operating benefits and efficiencies
  • Specifies, procures, and delivers key capital equipment including commissioning, training, maintenance programs, spare parts, etc. in accordance with business goals and strategies.
  • Provides process technology trends, insights, and benchmarking assessments to provide counsel to Plant & Senior Leadership Teams
  • Create and executes network TPM and OEE programs to improve equipment YOY performance, capability, and reliability.
  • Engages with operations functional partners to plan and execute safety, quality, and productivity improvements
  • Engages in Kaizen & problem-solving activities, taking ownership for process design related issues, facilitates root cause and solution development and ensures timely completion of actions and integration of changes.
  • Develops and implements cost reduction measures in accordance with strategic financial objectives.
  • Quality - Integrates quality at the source thinking and activities in daily, individual, team and project work.

Scope:

  • Complete responsibility for directing activities of engineering reports
  • Responsible for forecasting annual operating capital & expense budget, involved in capital budgeting process affecting all engineering activities including facility & equipment selection.
  • Assign projects, resources, and determine priorities in conjunction with business goals and priorities
  • Develop, plan, and implement timetables for engineering related projects
  • Build individual development plans for direct reports to include rotational assignments to improve & maintain an effective engineering organization.
  • Interacts and collaborates with associates in product, quality, manufacturing, external suppliers, and other key stakeholders with regards to quality and process improvement.
  • Daily contact with associates at all levels of the organization
  • Confers with Vice President Mfg. Engineering on major issues.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • BS degree in mechanical engineering or related field
  • 15 years engineering experience plus management experience in manufacturing environment
  • 10 years of experience capital project management in engineering, manufacturing or facilities management
  • 5 of years of experience leading and developing technical teams
  • 7 years of practical manufacturing and engineering experience in designing and improving manufacturing processes, process equipment and automation and error proofing (TPM, OEE, etc.)
  • Lean or 6 Sigma certified preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong Engineering skills (Equipment Design and Development, Automation, Lean Manufacturing Process Design and Development, Lean)
  • Strong project management skills with excellent attention to details
  • Strong Leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
  • Strong conceptual and analytical skills
  • Ability to oversee and manage multiple projects and priorities under limited timelines
  • Personal computer and various office and engineering software experience necessary (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.)
  • Skilled with equipment control systems, PLC, PAC, HMI, ProWorx & related software
  • Strong implementing equipment safety controls, guarding, interlocks, LOTO, etc.
  • Comfortable speaking and presenting to senior leadership
  • Integrates process methodology into daily work
  • Looks for innovative ways to streamline work processes across the division and involves stakeholders
  • Ability to lead and provide insight in DFM, 3P design activities to improve product design and process capabilities including error proofing, poka yoke, SKU rationalization, etc.
  • Identifies processing gaps using tools such as PFMEA, job hazard analysis, ergonomic assessment
  • Establishes forums to share best practices
  • Measures own work to plan and reports out at a micro and macro level
