Position overview

Sports Info Solutions (SIS) is looking for an innovative leader to revolutionize how we productize data: from our unique, sport-specific event capturing to league-wide Player Tracking solutions. We are hiring a Chief Data Scientist to lead the strategy and execution of our ambitious plans for developing groundbreaking data and consumer products that will transform the sports industry. SIS is launching a sport-agnostic Business Innovation & Data Solutions department reliant on a significant investment in Data Science, and the Chief Data Scientist will have full autonomy on building out their team and investing resources as they see fit.

As the newest member of our executive team, the person filling this position will also be relied upon to provide strategic insight as SIS becomes an even more prominent player in the sports data and technology ecosystem.

What you’ll do as Chief Data Scientist on the team at SIS:

Includes (but is not limited to):

  • Implement a vision for how we will organize and attack our data science initiatives through an agile development infrastructure
  • Responsible for the hiring and management of a high-functioning team composed of machine learning engineers, data scientists and independent contractors
  • Oversee all machine learning and predictive model development
  • Optimize the health of machine learning systems, including speed, model accuracy, reliability and performance
  • Work with key stakeholders throughout the organization to identify opportunities for leveraging our unique datasets to drive better – and faster – solutions
  • Assist in constructing near- and long-term strategy for our sport and gaming initiatives
  • Provide ad-hoc analyses as requested by clients and investors

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or related quantitative field; Doctoral Degree preferred
  • At least 8 years of relevant experience building complex machine learning models
  • At least 4 years in a data science leadership position
  • Deep hands-on experience in open-source programming languages (Python or R) for large-scale data analysis
  • Strong knowledge of data science technologies and machine learning concepts
  • Experience developing models from research to proof-of-concept to a production pipeline
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to think through complex concepts comprehensively and efficiently
  • Ability to and willingness to learn and get better every day

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with Machine Learning Operation (MLFlow, Domino Data Lab) and Computational Scaling platforms (Snowflake, AWS, Apache Spark)
  • Experience or interest in Product Development
  • Proficiency building Data Visualizations
  • Experience with GIT version control software (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket)
  • Understanding of advanced sports analytics concepts in Basketball, Baseball, and/or Football
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about potential expansion into a sport or sports that SIS currently does not serve
