Job Description

JOB TITLE: Health Information Manager

DEPARTMENT: Admin/Management

Position Overview:

This position provides health information services in support of patient care and treatment.

Essential Functions:

  • Plan and coordinate all services provided by the Health Information Department.
  • Supervise and maintain the Medical Records area including goal setting, planning, policy and procedure development, quality assurance and improvement, and competency of staff.
  • Design and implement the processes used to manage patient information while ensuring privacy and security of all medical records.
  • Provide leadership, strategic direction and management of the day to day operations of the Health Information Management (HIM) function.
  • Act as a technical or administrative resource for comprehensive lean process improvement and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) initiatives.
  • Coordinate, direct and evaluate daily activities of all file room operations at the FHCs.
  • Provide on-going training to professional, clinical and clerical staff regarding the medical record contents, coding, confidentiality, and security.
  • Train Super Users from each clinic department so as to increase the availability of Super User subject experts in each area.
  • Report on the review of medical records for timely completion and documentation.
  • Coordinate procedures for release of medical information and correspondence requests according to local policies, state and federal statutes and laws.
  • Recommend new policy and update existing policy in relation to content and context of the medical record.
  • Manage clinical data and records completion system to keep process and workflow consistent with professional standards and legal requirements.
  • Organize the storage, retrieval, archiving and destruction of medical records according to state statutes.
  • Serve as liaison between clinical, clerical, and administrative staff in issues involving coding, data acquisition and analysis.
  • Provide direction, consultation and implementation of new programs related to medical records.
  • Assist with other duties as needed and assigned.
  • Job Qualifications:

    The job qualifications for this position are as follows:

  • Must possess an Associates’ Degree in Health Information Management.
  • Registered Health Information Associate (RHIA) certification.
  • Two years Health Information experience.
  • One year of supervisory experience.
  • Have and maintain current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).
  • Shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with patients and other staff members.
  • Have knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in the use of basic word processing, data entry, and automated records.
  • Physical and Environmental Demands:

    The physical and environmental demands of this position are as follows:

    • Regular attendance required
    • Standing and bending in assessment & treatment of clients
    • Considerable walking
    • Lifting and carrying medical equipment
    • Moderate stress
    • Position may require long hours during critical deadlines
    • Prolonged telephone use
    • Prolonged work on a PC/Computer
