Southern Poverty Law Center is Hiring a Remote Director of Marketing

The Southern Poverty Law Center is seeking a Director of Marketing who will be responsible for promoting the importance of philanthropy at the SPLC by driving the strategy, execution and optimization for the direct mail and digital marketing programs. This position will collaborate cross-functionally with multiple departments to support the SPLC’s mission ,vision and impact by planning, crafting and executing relevant and compelling multi-channel direct and digital marketing fundraising campaigns.

Reporting directly to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Marketing oversees the day-to-day operations of the marketing team and direct mail and digital marketing program planning to sustain and identify opportunities to grow donor acquisition, renewal, reinstatment, retention and monthly giving appeals through our various channels such as mail, canvassing, email, online and telemarketing.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Develop and implement marketing and communication strategies across traditional and digital mediums, leveraging each platform’s unique strengths for optimal performance;
  • Ensure direct marketing and digital communications meet brand consistency and fall within the editorial guidelines, while crafting strong and compelling campaigns;
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects through effective project management and tracking multiple deliverables through project management software and systems;
  • Create and manage compelling data-driven campaigns aimed at strategically meeting and growing the SPLC’s donor base;
  • Work collaboratively with the other directors, managers, program staff and communications teams across the organization to develop and execute engaging campaigns to support the SPLC’s goals;
  • Manage the preparation and implementation schedule for all direct marketing campaigns and ensure all campaigns are completed by the established deadline and within budget;
  • Identify and evaluate new and innovative areas for direct marketing revenue growth and emerging technologies;
  • Directs the development, creation and management of all development marketing and communications and manages the departmental budget and revenue reconciliation processes;
  • Develop comprehensive reporting systems in collaboration with Development Operations to support the strategic analysis of the direct and digital marketing programs;
  • Oversee and manage relationships with external vendors, in addition to seeking new vendors to improve and optimize fundraising data and systems;
  • Manage a team of approximately a dozen staff, providing mentoring and coaching to support the work;
  • Hire, train, establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign duties, and conduct performance reviews;
  • Leverage the resources of the direct marketing program and the SPLC’s large supporter base to provide support to SPLC’s communication and programmatic departments; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications –

Education and Related Work Experience:

Required:

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in annual giving, fundraising marketing and direct mail;
  • At least five (5) years management experience;
  • Experience running $20 million fundraising programs and managing multi-million dollar campaign budgets; and
  • High School Diploma or GED.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Strong management and communication skills;
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills;
  • Expertise tracking and reporting campaign analytics;
  • Demonstrated leadership ability collaborating with cross-departmental teams;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop strong working relationships with colleagues and vendors;
  • Self-starter with strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail;
  • Ability to prioritize and manage the needs and demands from multiple stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve high performance goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
  • Flexibility to travel throughout the United States;
  • Commitment to ideals of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion; and
  • Commitment to fostering an anti-racist work culture and to anti-racist principles and learning.

Work Designation:

This role has the following work designation options:

  • Distant Remote: Will work remotely and are not expected to work in the states in which the SPLC has an office or in an SPLC office. They may be required to attend occasional meetings or activities in the states in which the SPLCE has an office or elsewhere.
  • Local Remote: Will work remotely but is expected to attend work-related activities that occure at the SPLC offices or in the states in which the SPLC operates.
  • Telework: Will work at an SPLC office at least three days per week and may work two days per week from an alternative work location.

Other Special Considerations:

This job is performed under general office conditions and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.
