The Victim Advocate is primarily responsible for attending to the needs of shelter residents, providing crisis support via the hotline, and enforce/support the safety of the shelter facility. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Provide supportive advocacy for survivors residing in the shelter, including but not limited to: actively listen, provide encouragement and support, provide information and answer questions and/or problem solve as needed, provide access to commodities and other items, and interact with residents with compassion, empathy, and respect.
Assume responsibility for the operation of the 24-hour hotline and courteously answer all incoming phone calls.
Become familiar with clients’ needs by reading files, logs, and notes.
Ensure resident rooms are clean, stocked, and ready for new residents when vacant.
Approve new shelter residents per established guidelines.
Maintain ready supply of intake files for new clients.
Complete intake of new residents when they arrive per established guidelines.
Properly record, copy, file and distribute new client information.
Assume responsibility for the upkeep and maintenance of the shelter.
Assist, support and encourage client’s completion of daily chores.
Ensure safety, sanitation and health regulations are adhered to at all times.
Ensure completion of assigned tasks and duties.
Ensure walkways are clean and safe in inclement weather.
Ensure general use areas are stocked and supplies are readily available for
resident’s use.
Maintain logs and any other prudent documentation, including daily updates to room lists and chore list.
Attending all monthly staff meetings, training, and other mandatory meetings.
Assist with special projects and events.
Keep current on shelter policies and procedures.
Model appropriate professional boundaries with clients, staff, vendors, volunteers and donors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Excellent customer service and public relations skills.
Understanding of the definition, dynamics and cause of domestic violence.
Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Able to coordinate well with others, and work effectively with a variety of people.
Professional and reliable.
Bilingual, Spanish is preferred
