This position will require excellent writing and editing skills; strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills; and creativity, innovation, and flexibility. In addition, the ideal candidate must be able to travel internationally.

Responsibilities

  • Copyedit and edit APN and Next Gen publications and online content according to standards of The Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Support APN program staff with regard to publicity and communication.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining the APN’s social media channels on a daily basis (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn accounts); manage APN’s blog Kujenga Amani—including blog posts, essays, book reviews, interviews, etc.—and podcasts.
  • Assist with curating and providing content for digital media projects; track and report social media metrics.
  • Create and maintain design assets (i.e., graphics, photos, posters, videos, Flickr albums).
  • Edit/update traditional program output, such as working papers, policy briefs, and other print materials.
  • Manage the visual presentation of all program print and electronic materials, such as letterhead, use of logo, brochures, website, etc.
  • Manage APN and Next Gen contact and guest lists; assist with communications with alumni, grantees, and partner organizations.
  • Other duties and additional responsibilities and projects as directed.

 Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (creative writing/journalism/public affairs/communication background preferred).
  • Superior written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, assume responsibility, and respond to changing demands.
  • Team player who is also self-motivated and can work independently.
  • Knowledge of and interest in software and new media applications, such as Audacity, Photoshop, Canva, Illustrator, and MS Office.
  • Proficient in web publishing platforms, website maintenance, database management, and internet resources; familiarity with HTML, CSS, and WordPress a plus.
  • Previous editorial and design experience desirable.
  • Experience with media technologies helpful, such as blogging, podcasting, wikis, etc.
  • Interest in and knowledge of Africa and/or peace, security, and post-conflict development issues a plus.
  • Willing and able to travel internationally, if required.
