The overall purpose of the medication aide position is to administer oral and topical medications to residents. Incumbents perform these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations, and consistent with facility polices. Incumbents also perform routine daily task required in maintaining the health, comfort, and well being of the residents.

Qualifications:

• State certifications as a nursing assistant mandatory
• State approved medication administration certification
• Complete familiarity with duties of a certified nursing assistant\
• Highly developed observation skills are desirable
• Functional literacy in English is required
• Tolerance, patience, empathy, and concern are desirable
• Vision must be adequate to read medication labels, ect

Essential Functions

• Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with any state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy
• Must demonstrate knowledge of five rights of medications administration
• May take and record vital signs of residents as assigned or as may be required by certain medications
• Record the administration of medication and/or treatments appropriately
• Observes for and reports any reactions and/or side effects of medication to a licensed nurse on the appropriate shift
• Administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy
• Must be able to pull/push medication cart for extended periods
• Must be able to perform moderate to heavy lifting
• Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods of time
• Documents reason for and response to PRN medications in a timely manner
• May dispense narcotics and must account for them under supervision of the licensed nurse per facility policy
• Properly secures medication carts/medication rooms per state/federal regulations and facility policy
• Attends facility education in-services
• Performs other duties as assigned
