Overview

Registered Dietician/Nutritionist - Stony Brook Children's Service, UFPC

Location: Stony Brook, NY

Schedule: Full Time

Days/Hours: Monday through Friday - 8:30am to 5:00pm (Hours may vary)

Responsibilities

SUMMARY: The Dietician / Nutritionist will be responsible for providing comprehensive nutritional assessments for obese children and adolescents. The incumbent may also provide extensive education regarding nutrition and regular nutritional counseling for pediatric and adolescent patients. This Dietician/Nutritionist functions as a part of the multidisciplinary care team providing nutrition care to medically complex patients. The Dietician/Nutritionist serves as preceptor for Stony Brook Hospital Dietetic Internship Program, obtains prior authorizations as needed and participates in research studies conducted in the pediatric GI division. 

Job Duties & Essential Functions:

  • Provide comprehensive nutritional assessments to obese children and adolescents.
  • Conduct individual and/or group nutritional education sessions for patients.
  • Keep written records for all work performed and progress notes for each patient appointment in an electronic medical record.
  • Participate in research studies and quality improvement projects being conducted within the Pediatrics Gastrointestinal (GI) division. Analyzed extensive food records obtained as part of studies looking at obesity and gut biome.
  • Work with PI’s to develop a study which will assess incidence of obesity and overweight BMI in pediatric patients with newly diagnosed Celiac Disease. We will also trend Vitamin B12 levels at time of diagnosis, 1 year and 2 year post diagnosis.
  • Serve as preceptor for Stony Brook Hospital Dietetic Internship Program. Involves precepting and teaching approximately 16 interns every year. Working with interns during outpatient GI, Cystic Fibrosis and Muscular Dystrophy clinics, as well as aiding them in projects or research they may be partaking in involving pediatrics.
  • Part of the multidisciplinary care team for Muscular Dystrophy clinic.
    • Involves preparing for upcoming clinics, providing nutrition care to these medically complex patients, and partaking in meetings with the rest of the multidisciplinary care to discuss patient care.
    • Provide medical nutrition therapy for various conditions including weight management, failure to thrive, hypercholesterolemia, Cystic Fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, and various gastrointestinal disorders including Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Celiac Disease, Eosinophilic Esophagitis, Short Bowel Syndrome, Reflux, Non Alcoholic Liver Disease and Milk Protein Allergy. 
    • Conduct comprehensive assessments on all patients including a review of diagnoses and symptoms, diet history, weight trend, laboratory markers, and lifestyle and behavioral factors.
    • Create age appropriate modified diets in accordance with physician diet orders and adapt them to meet individual needs of patients. Oversee care of patients receiving enteral nutrition therapy.
  • Organize and present at Annual Celiac Family Education Day.
  • Obtain prior authorizations for enteral formulas.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

Required Education & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Registered Dietician license.
  • Completion of one (1) year dietician internship approved by the American Dietetic Association.
  • Previous celiac and GI nutrition experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) with patients, families and the public.

 Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master's degree.
  • One (1) or more years of experience providing nutritional assessments and education (individual and group) within a clinical setting.
  • Knowledge and experience working with obese individuals and individuals with eating disorders preferred.
  • Able to communicate (verbal and written) in Spanish.

Physical Demands:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with patients, staff and medical providers. The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. This position is largely sedentary and requires the employee to remain stationary for a majority of the day. The responsibilities and tasks outlined in this job description are not exhaustive and may change as determined by the needs of CPMP.
