Responsibilities

Performs experimental investigations and similar research projects utilizing extensive applications of mathematical and statistical methodologies.

  • Elicit information from partners such as teammates from the Reports and Analysis Branch of the Office of Science Policy, Planning, and Communications and staff from the National Institute of Mental Health on their analytical questions, assess feasibility of answering said questions, and advise on analysis design and data sources1
  • Develop plans for analysis using knowledge of statistical methods, data sources and computer systems; Recognize challenges and recommend their consideration alongside potential solutions2
  • Carry out statistical methods appropriate for addressing questions about mental health re-search and its associated activities, outputs, and impacts; Design and conduct analysis to support categorization of grants by research method, condition, and disease3
  • Discuss and evaluate plans with partners; Collaborate with individuals from different offices and functional areas4
  • Perform on-going data management; Retrieve data and construct variables from existing databases, particularly using SQL5
  • Use statistical software, particularly R, to perform analyses including but not limited to descriptive analysis, multi-variate analysis, natural language processing, and machine-learning
  • Explain methods used, interpret results of analysis, characterize limitations and potential biases to technical and lay audiences
  • Develop, draft, prepare and review written reports, briefings, and presentations
  • Communicate regarding progress of projects; Complete analysis in the timeframe agreed upon with partners
  • Manage essential documents and report preparation; Ensure that descriptions of methods are complete and accurate, and that graphs, tables, figures and interpretations reflect the results of the analyses

Qualifications

Certifications & Licenses

  • MS or PhD in Statistics, Biostatistics, Economics, Epidemiology, Demography or a related quantitative field.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience conducting and using analysis of large, administrative databases.

  • Demonstrated expertise and experience managing and analyzing large data sets using R and SQL.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical items to diverse audiences, including lay stakeholders.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Highly motivated self-starter.
  • Software

    • Familiarity with Python, NLP, machine learning techniques a plus.
    • Familiarity with the NIH grant-making process and/or NIH administrative databases a plus.
