Overview

Responsibilities

Draws blood by venipuncture, skin puncture or arterial collection for medical tests and blood donations.

  • Determine appropriate blood tubes required based on blood tests ordered
  • Select gauge needles and prepare veins or fingers for blood drawing
  • Draw patient blood for requested tests, using needles, finger sticks or other means1
  • Label blood sample correctly; match specimens to patients
  • Prepare blood samples for transport to laboratory of testing
  • Dispose of contaminated and biohazardous materials in accordance with laws, regulations, and procedures

Conducts interviews and verifies patient records.

  • Note blood collection information in patients records, as required
  • Determine donor suitability, according to interview results, vital signs, and medical history2
  • Identify patients by reviewing their identity documents, including ID, medical records or other means
  • Assess patient needs; review patient history; determine reasons for drawing blood

Takes vital signs.

  • Take patient vital signs

Note patients vital sign information in patient charts
