Responsibilities
Draws blood by venipuncture, skin puncture or arterial collection for medical tests and blood donations.
- Determine appropriate blood tubes required based on blood tests ordered
- Select gauge needles and prepare veins or fingers for blood drawing
- Draw patient blood for requested tests, using needles, finger sticks or other means1
- Label blood sample correctly; match specimens to patients
- Prepare blood samples for transport to laboratory of testing
- Dispose of contaminated and biohazardous materials in accordance with laws, regulations, and procedures
Conducts interviews and verifies patient records.
- Note blood collection information in patients records, as required
- Determine donor suitability, according to interview results, vital signs, and medical history2
- Identify patients by reviewing their identity documents, including ID, medical records or other means
- Assess patient needs; review patient history; determine reasons for drawing blood
Takes vital signs.
- Take patient vital signs
Note patients vital sign information in patient charts
