San Diego American Indian Health Center is Hiring a Billing Specialist Near San Diego, CA

The Position

Manage the reimbursement process beginning with review of visit data entry for all services rendered in the Medical / BH Department by carrier requirements through reconciliation of payor source responses.

Essential Functions

Daily:

  1. Book all patient and third-party payments in QuickBooks (QB)
  2. Upload evidence of payment information to Dt-trak (billing company).
  3. Update payment reconciliation spreadsheet.
  4. Print, review and mail paper claim forms for OHI and DTI services.
  5. Review explanation of benefit forms received and forward to appropriate party as needed.
  6. Answer patient phone calls; review patient ledger to resolve billing issues for medical, behavioral health, and dental.
  7. Prepare bank deposits for cash payments.
  8. Eligibility Verification.
  9. Scan checks for deposit.
  10. File records.
  11. Route adjustment requests to Dt-trak.
  12. Performs data entry as needed.
  13. Must comply with HIPAA guidelines.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisory staff.

Weekly:

  1. Prepare refund requests as needed.
  2. Ensure all payments from prior week have been posted in patient management system.
  3. Manage requests coming from Dt-trak
  4. Provide billing records for subpoenas
  5. Scanning as needed

Monthly:

  1. Reconciliation of patient revenue (bank vs. QB)

Education/Experience

Education and/or Experience: Sufficient training and experience is required to demonstrate the ability to perform the above duties and responsibilities and to attain the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below. The knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform this function are normally acquired through either of the following:

  • To perform this job successfully, the individual should have a CPC certification or a minimum of two (2) years medical coding/billing experience along with a working knowledge of Medical terminology and CPT coding.
  • High school diploma or GED with two years’ related work experience in a community health setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • High school diploma or GED with two years’ of college course work in a related field and two years’ related work experience in a community health setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge/Skills

Language Skills: Able to read and comprehend at a 12th grade level; able to communicate professionally in person and in writing. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

Mathematical Skills: Must possess basic mathematical skills to complete the responsibilities of the position and includes ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Must be familiar with common fractions, decimals, compute rate, ratio, prepare and to interpret graphs.

Reasoning Ability: Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Apply logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative approaches, solutions or conclusions in order to effectively resolve problems.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of accounting software, database software, internet software, Microsoft Office applications.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job with or without accommodation.

  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently lift, carry, push, pull objects, including bodily motion
  • Moving on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly from one work site to another
  • Standing for sustained periods of time
  • Substantial movements of the wrists, hands and or/fingers to operate computer and other office equipment such as telephones and printers
  • Occasionally ascend/descend stairs to access different departments
