Job Description

Overview and Responsibilities

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota is seeking a full time Mechanic for our Winona campus. This position is responsible for maintaining all university owned vehicles and equipment, including gas, diesel, and electric. Job responsibilities include:

 

  • Repair and maintain engines on university owned vehicles and equipment; disassemble and reassemble as needed to replace parts and troubleshoot operational difficulties.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on all vehicles and equipment, including installing component and part upgrades, controlling corrosion, and completing winterization procedures.
  • Inspect and diagnose vehicle and equipment condition to identify worn or damaged parts; complete needed repairs. Recondition and replace parts as needed.
  • Perform snow removal by operating snow removal equipment in an efficient manner.
  • Assist with general lawn maintenance and grounds work.
  • Contain costs by using warranty and evaluating service and parts options.
  • Maintain supply inventory; place orders and verify receipt.
  • Keep accurate records of maintenance work performed.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical and regulation publications.
  • Other maintenance duties as assigned.

 

The selected candidate will have the following skills and experience:

 

  • Observe safety guidelines at all times and follow work procedures established by the university.
  • Demonstrate professional interactions with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Have the ability to operate and maintain all snow removal and lawn equipment.
  • Have sound problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to use power tools, hand tools, and precision measuring devices.
  • Be able to lift heavy equipment and tools up to 50 pounds, as well as bend, crouch, crawl, climb into spaces where equipment is located.
  • Be able to climb and work well at heights.
  • Be able to work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
  • Have basic computer skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Available to work nights, weekends, and early mornings as needed for snow removal.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in gas/diesel engines and electronic diagnosis preferred.
  • Valid Minnesota driver’s license with a good driving record required.
  • Strong background in welding and flame cutting equipment.
