SUMMARY

The Staff Accountant will maintain all aspects of accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll functions. This position oversees and manages the day-to-day fiscal operations, which includes recording all financial transactions, including cash payments, into the correct general ledger and verify that they are accurate. They will also be responsible for maintaining all financial records, completing required tax forms, processing payroll, and generating regular reports for upper management. This position is a collaborative position that will interact with all levels of staff and must do so in a culturally competent manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities of this position include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Review financial statements, expenses and previous tax returns to identify the best strategy for organizing and monitoring
  • Present quarterly and yearly financial reports to management
  • Perform general bookkeeping and organize financial forms, documents and receipts
  • Ensure all financial transactions within the organization are accounted for and follow legal standards
  • Analyze annual budget recording transactions in need of follow-up documentation
  • Create personal and business invoices and request payment for services rendered
  • Gather appropriate materials regarding yearly tax tables, instructions and forms to accurately calculate taxes for clients
  • Work closely with clients and businesses to obtain personal information regarding potential deductions (garnishments, employment verifications), educational grants and/or allowances

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of state and federal tax form processes and how to accurately properly prepare forms for each
  • Knowledge of all aspects of generally accepted accounting principles and non-profit accounting, including ethical standards.
  • One year experience in nonprofit accounting and/or grant management and/or two years’ experience in financial management.
  • Experience consulting tax handbooks or other printed materials to determine the proper procedure for preparing challenging returns
  • Experience with Microsoft Word for Windows, Excel and Sage Software MIP fund accounting or experience with similar word processing and database management systems.
  • Data Entry Skills
  • Attention to detail, confidentiality, and thoroughness and experience working with sensitive information
  • Able to communicate financial information clearly to all staff and Board of Directors.
  • Able to meet deadlines/due dates and to work under pressure.
  • Knowledge of accounting processes and advanced mathematical skills
  • Skilled using various accounting software and experience in troubleshooting common accounting program problems
  • Personal integrity when working with personal and sensitive financial information
  • Professional experience in financial forecasting and risk analysis
  • Excellent organizational skills and be self-motivated
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with video conferencing platforms, such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff.
  • Agreement with the SafePlace mission, values, organizational culture statement and philosophy statement.
  • Subscribe to the theory of empowerment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensure as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is strongly preferred
  • Bilingual/bicultural in Spanish and English
  • Completion of the initial SafePlace ACT training.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Accounting degree. One year’s experience in crisis nonprofit accounting. Specific knowledge, experience and abilities acquired must include the following:

  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to handle stress effectively.

  • Ability to accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of U.S. currency.

COMPUTER SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess the following computer skills:

  • Basic computer skills and basic word processing and spreadsheets, including knowledge of Internet and e-mail.
  • Experience with computerized accounting systems.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • SafePlace initial ACT training certification provided on the job.
  • Valid driver’s license and current automobile liability insurance
  • CPR/First aid training certifications, preferred.

TRAINING REQUIRED

Employee is required to complete the initial SafePlace ACT Training. After completion of first year, employee must attend 20 hours of on-going direct service training a year, which must include 15 hours advocacy-based counseling and 12 hours sexual assault training.
