Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a part time Student Assistant for the Child Health Institute of NJ at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Under the direction of Derek Sant’Angelo, the Student Assistant will be responsible for the performance and analysis of transducing mouse T cells with Zbtb20. These cells would then be transferred into KO mice to see if they can rescue the mice from DSS induced colitis. This project is part of a larger effort in the lab to study how the immune system controls tissue homeostasis. In addition, the Student Assistant will perform techniques that include PCR, running agarose gels, cell culture, isolation of T cells from mice, and in vitro T cell assays. As part of their career development to transition to the next phase of their career, the Student Assistant will be trained in improving their experimental design skills and their oral and written presentation skills. Multiple resources for career development to aid with these requirements will be provided by the PI.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Perform techniques that include PCR, running agarose gels, cell culture, isolation of T cells from mice, and in vitro T cell assays.
  • Performs consumable and supply ordering in the laboratory and monitor reagents availability and usage.
  • Learn and develop laboratory techniques and procedures in cell biology and animal handling to carry out research assignments.
  • Compiles and analyzes data with appropriate statistical analysis, conclusions and future directions in support of further CHI research.
  • Make and aliquot research reagents like, but not limited to, buffers, DNA ladders and gel dyes.
  • Assist in utilization of the laboratory facilities, equipment, and instruments.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Must be a current Rutgers Student Undergraduate major in biomedical sciences with coursework in biology, genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology.
  • Must have relevant background and prior laboratory experience.

  • Applicant must have effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Requires strong computer proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools.
  • Applicant must be highly motivated, self-driven, creative, and interactive.
  • Applicant must have the ability to work collaboratively and independently.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with cell culture procedures in a research laboratory setting.
  • Prior laboratory experience working with rodents/mice helpful.
