Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Accounting Assistant II for Student Accounting, Billing and Cashier Services (Student ABC) within the University Controller’s Office. Reporting to the Supervisor, Student Refunds and Compliance, this position is responsible for the processing of all student refund payments for both Rutgers Legacy (New Brunswick) and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS) while providing best-in-class customer service to the New Brunswick One Stop Services team in support of domestic and international student refund inquiries.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Responsible for the refund processing reconciliation, including but not limited to investigation and reprocessing of all rejected ACH refunds and returned paper check refunds while ensuring all tracking is completed appropriately and within standard processing & control guidelines.
  • Serves as the primary point of customer service contact for student refund inquiries.
  • Assists the Business Manager, Refunds and Title IV Compliance in the creation of Financial Operations metrics and other productivity reports as needed.
  • Reviews and reissues stale dated student refunds.
  • Assists in promoting financial literacy and a climate of financially responsible borrower behavior.
  • Provides accurate and comprehensive financial information.
  • Utilizes strong analytical and accounting skills
  • Remains even tempered when servicing customers by providing courteous service to all University staff, students, and third-party service providers.
  • Interacts daily with other Rutgers University departments including Financial Aid, Accounts Payable, OIT and the other areas of Student ABC.
  • Interacts with the university’s payment and refund partners, students, parents, scholarship sponsors, and one-stop student services.
  • Responsible for the administration and recordkeeping required to comply with the federal student loan regulations for Title IV and VII Campus Based Federal Student Loan Exit Counseling.
  • Assists in promoting financial literacy and a climate of financially responsible borrower behavior.
  • Provides accurate and comprehensive financial information.
  • Possesses a thorough knowledge of collection and federal student loan regulations.
  • Maintains the confidentiality and sensitivity of borrower accounts and financial circumstances.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge and understanding of Federal and State regulations governing Title IV student loan programs and consumer credit
  • Accounting and finance experience
  • Knowledge of mainframe and PC data processing
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written formats
  • Verbal communication – the ability to speak clearly and effectively communicate information and ideas
  • Excellent customer services skills.
  • Experience working in a fast pace high-pressure environment with a demonstrated ability to remain even tempered when servicing all customers.

  • Must be familiar, and act in accordance with the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), GLBA, UDAAP, RedFlag, GAAP, NJ State Escheatment, TITLE IV and Title VII Financial Aid,
  • Must conduct oneself at all times in an ambassadorial, committed, and personable manner demonstrating respect for the position, students/customers, fellow colleagues, departmental integrity, and the university’s best interest.
