ABOUT THIS ROLE

Overview

The role of Pastor of Worship is focused on glorifying God and making disciples of Jesus Christ using worship and the creative arts to communicate and celebrate the Gospel. The Pastor of Worship is a ministry shepherd who leads the church to exalt Jesus Christ, values strong relationships, and pursues musical excellence.

Status: Full-time

Essential Roles & Responsibilities

  • Lead worship and oversee other creative elements in our services.
  • Shepherd and equip volunteers.
  • Create and teach a worship culture at Vertical Church that gives glory and praise to Jesus.
  • Creative arts team leadership.
  • A smaller, additional pastoral ministry responsibility, such as leading a young adults group or similar type of ministry, will be added to this position (to be discussed with the candidate).

Functional Tasks Related to Each Role

Role 1: Lead and Build Weekend Worship Services

  • Be on stage during weekends.
  • Plan songs and creative service elements.
  • Pastor our church in biblically faithful worship.
  • Communicate with all weekend volunteers involved in High Impact adult Services.
  • Lead the Sunday morning run-through from start to finish, ensuring that all parts of the worship service can be executed with excellence and that all volunteers and staff understand their roles.
  • Work with Sr. Pastor on service direction.
  • Add different worship elements into our services like baptisms, communion, child dedications, Scripture readings, etc.
  •  Lead worship rehearsals, ensuring that by the end of rehearsal, there is clarity on each part of the service and that technical excellence has been achieved.
  • Coordinate music for special services (Good Friday, Easter, Christmas Eve, All-Church Events, etc.).

Role 2: Shepherd and Equip Volunteers

  •  Care for volunteers in the Worship and Production Ministry, shepherding them through various challenges inside and outside of church ministry.
  • Schedule, train, encourage, and celebrate volunteers.
  •  Connect volunteers with small groups and active discipleship.
  •  Coordinate a system that provides for the recruiting, auditioning, and developing of all volunteers on the Worship and Production teams.
  • Provide for music arrangements as needed, including vocal charts (involves various preludes, congregational songs, and special presentations that take place weekly).
  • Create a system and structure where vocalists and band participants are encouraged to develop their gifts and use them in various places throughout the ministry.
  • Encourage and Coach creativity and artistic Christ-centered expression in the development of artists, vocalists, and musicians.
  • Some routine administrative responsibilities as delegated.

Role 3: Create and Teach Worship Culture

  • Inculcate our worship philosophy within the Worship and Production Team and in our larger church family.
  • Personally model passionate, contagious worship.
  • Hold team gatherings to create, develop team spirit around our culture and values.
  • Coordinate and oversee creative planning for all worship services and special events with the Senior Pastor.

Role 4: Creative Arts Team Leadership

  • Provide space for collaboration and use of gifting regarding the arts in our Church.
  • Keep the look and vibe of our church within our philosophy and on point with various Seasons/sermon series.
  • Keep the creative direction in sync with Sr Pastor’s vision.
  •  Keep creative direction theologically sound.
  • Create content for creative elements and new pieces.
  • Find and share God at Work stories/testimonies.

Qualifications:

  • The Worship Leader must meet the spiritual qualifications for pastors/elders/overseers and deacons found in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 & 2. His leadership must grow out of his spiritual fellowship and integrity before Christ.
  • A spiritually and emotionally mature person prepared to provide leadership with integrity through their example of ongoing spiritual growth and devotion to Jesus Christ and his church.
  • A teachable spirit, a servant mindset, and a willingness to work as part of a collaborative creative team led by the Senior Pastor.
  • Strong leader, capable of casting vision and recruiting and managing volunteers.
  • Alignment with church doctrine and philosophy of ministry.

Other Skills and Qualifications:

  • Vocally proficient.
  •  Acoustic Guitar and/or Keyboard proficiency.
  • Experienced in playing lead electric guitar preferred.
  • A friendly, energetic personality.
  • Proficient in software such as Ableton for worship experiences and ProPresenter for presentations.
  • Able to troubleshoot and solve problems quickly.
  • General understanding of lighting, live video, and Front of House audio systems.
  • Edit and upload weekly service videos to streaming platforms.
  • Familiarity with CCLI, SongSelect, and Planning Center Online.
  • Willing to serve as needed in other areas of the ministry at VC.
  • Connect/Consider Meetings for Visitors/New Members.
  • Small Group Ministry.
  • Research, shop, and purchase various needed ministry items - special projects, events, and pastoral care.

Credentials

  • BA in a related field (e.g., instrumental music, music education, etc.) or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in leading worship teams.

  • A team player who is committed to excellence and creativity while living out a healthy lifestyle and exhibiting ongoing personal spiritual growth.
