SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, the Staff Accountant II will be responsible for classifying and processing accounting transactions, preparing general ledger reconcilements, analyzing account variances, and drafting monthly financial reports. The Staff Accountant II will also review daily monitoring reports, prepare key reports for significant accounts and partner with other bank departments, as needed, in the resolution of accounting matters. Other responsibilities will include maintaining the general ledger system as well as serving as a critical backup to the Accounts Payable, Wire Transfer and daily cash management reporting functions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Prepares the daily reconcilement of critical general ledger accounts to applicable sub ledgers as well as the daily monitoring of all critical suspense and clearing accounts to ensure accounts are in balance and all transactions are appropriately accounted for.
  • Utilizing the month-end checklist, prepare all journal entries for the monthly financial reporting close.
  • Upon the closing of the books each month, prepare general ledger account reconciliations for all balance sheet accounts.
  • Consistent with the Bank's FDICIA internal control procedures, document the monthly detailed financial variance analysis performed on all significant changes in account balances.
  • Assist the Controller with the annual budget process and ongoing budget variance analysis, as needed.
  • Maintain all formal investment purchase and sales documentation, ensuring compliance with Bank policy and procedures.
  • Utilizing reports from FHN, prepare all investment-related monthly journal entries, reconcilements, and account rollforwards.
  • Maintain the monthly rollforward of OREO by working closely with the Collections Manager to monitor and track activity on all OREO properties. Record all journal entries to reflect changes in OREO balances, including assessing the need to capitalize any capital improvements made to a property. Prepare the monthly OREO report for the Board of Directors.
  • Prepare the monthly Loan Rollforward and Loan Accrued Interest Receivable system reconciliation.
  • Assist with regulatory reporting requirements by preparing the monthly Federal Reserve Bank Collateral Reports, the quarterly Federal Home Loan Bank Qualifying Collateral Reports, and the annual OCC Deposit Report.
  • Prepare and transmit monthly data files to the third parties used by Finance for various purposes (D360, ALM, ProfitStar); ensure accuracy and completeness of all files prior to transmission.
  • Serve as a back up to the Staff Accountant I for the following functions: Wire Transfers, Accounts Payable, and Daily Cash Management Reporting.
  • Maintain both the chart of accounts within the general ledger system as well as parameters that allow for the automated posting of transactions within the Silverlake system. Responsible for the manual process required to close out each monthly period and year end within the Silverlake GL module.
  • Assist the Controller with all internal/external audit requests.
  • Create and maintain the documentation of all departmental procedures for all relevant job functions.
  • Complete all assigned online or in-person Compliance, Human Resources, and Departmental training modules/classes.

SKILLS REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE DUTIES OF THE JOB

  • Solid understanding of basic accounting principles to research and interpret data and prepare correcting entries.
  • Strong time management and critical thinking ability.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel and data analysis skills; familiarity with Cognos reporting would be beneficial but not required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented, accurate with numbers and able to prove work.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • College degree or extensive course work in Accounting, Business or Finance; equivalent work experience may be substituted.
  • 4-6 years of experience in accounting/finance with a minimum of three (3) years working with general ledger, reconciliation, month-end closing, and/or financial analysis.
  • Experience in the banking industry preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of accounting functions and related internal controls.
  • General knowledge of accounting systems.

WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
