Rock West Composites, Inc. has an exciting opportunity for a Design Engineer. 

Rock West Composites, Inc. is an engineering and manufacturing company dedicated to providing innovative solutions for commercial, academic and government customers. This position is located at our San Diego, CA location and reports to the Director of Design Engineering.

Position Summary:

The Senior Composite Design Engineer will be able to mentor/supervise junior engineers as well as participate in designing, modeling, and generation of drawings of deliverable products, molds, tooling and fixtures in collaboration with program management, customers, manufacturing engineers and production personnel. Design work is primarily conducted in SolidWorks.

Essential Responsibilities May Include:

• Function as a focal for various design and analysis efforts.
• Drawing drafting check and initial engineering check.
• Conduct model verification. Generate interface control models and drawings.
• Perform computer-aided design of components and subsystems primarily using SolidWorks to program specifications for performance, cost, schedule.
• Perform design of composite molds and tooling, trim tooling, assembly jigs, and quality inspection fixtures to support production activities.
• Work with teams of design and manufacturing engineers on integrated projects to establish clear lines of communication and support project schedule, supply chain, and incorporate in-process design changes.
• Lead customer product design reviews (PDR, CDR, MRR etc) and interact with project management regarding design refinements.
• Can assist program managers and their customers write SOWs and other technical requirements.
• Represent RWC engineering while accompanying PM's and BD on customer site visits.
• Generates and interprets Engineering and Technical specifications & evaluates effect to existing processes, designs and delivered parts.

Education and Experience:

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or Structural Engineering.
• 5 years of composite design experience 
• Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar CAD programs.
• Proven knowledge of composite materials, manufacturing processes and integrated design of advanced structures that are lightweight, dimensionally stable, designed for manufacturability, and high precision.
• Advanced knowledge of drafting standards including GD&T practices and ability to conduct tolerance assessments.
• Experience with composite tooling including interaction with manufacturing engineering and production staff.
• Familiar with government specifications, interplay and supersession. Capable of researching and recommending equivalent specs when needed for cost/schedule avoidance
• Advanced composite design knowledge concerning material selection, tooling, structural performance and cost estimating.
• Basic static strength calculations (shear/compression stress, bending stress).
• Competency writing technical reports and other documents.
• Knowledge of MSOffice suite: Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Teams
• Required: US Citizen or Permanent Resident
• Desired: Ability to obtain security clearance
