POSITION PURPOSE: This position involves a variety of engineering duties, including design of new plants and upgrades, continuous improvement of production processes, management of medium to large capital projects, and evaluation/implementation of new process technologies. This position will be a technical expert of multiple production processes, the chemistry involved, and process equipment and components within a biomass-based diesel plant. This position will be play a lead role in the design of plant upgrades and new plants. Additionally, this position will provide operational support to existing plants, develop and maintain PSM programs, and preventative maintenance/reliability programs for facilities within the Renewable Energy Group network. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Key Accountabilities: Process Engineering Responsible for adhering to all health and safety policies and guidelines within the REG network as well as 3rd party facilities Design and specify processes and equipment for new or existing plants Develop/maintain Process and Flow Diagrams and Piping & Instrument Diagrams of plant processes Understand plant control systems and interfaces Develop/maintain control narratives for plant processes, and lead the design of plant graphics and PI ProcessBook pages Develop and maintain process safety information and other elements of the plants PSM program Participate in or lead Process Hazard Analysis related to process changes Review and approve Management Of Changes including representing Engineering in the PSSR Travel to REG plant locations to preform training, audit systems, and help troubleshoot systems as needed Work with Plant Managers to meet plant goals (budget, yields, etc.). Monitor plant Key Performance Indicators using PI and Excel to maintain process towards plant goals Recognize process improvement opportunities and work with plant management to prioritize and implement solutions Provide mentoring and coaching to other engineers Project Management Implement small to large-scale projects related to process or facility improvements; will include working with REG Construction & Technology (C&T) and/or outside contractors Will lead project efforts including scheduling, budgeting, and engineering contractor management Travel to facility as needed to monitor project activity/progress Develop Capital Requests as needed Train personnel on proper techniques in operations, equipment operations, equipment maintenance, testing, and other areas as necessary Technical Leadership Develop engineering standards for process design, equipment sizing, etc. as needed Make proposals to Executive Directors for REG C&T and Manufacturing Operations Assist in leading organization of plant engineering documentation in both print and electronic formats, using Windows file shares, SharePoint, and other document control technologies implemented by I.T. Research and arrange for/participate in continuing education opportunities, for either an individual or group (such as a vendor presentation) Other frequent duties: Assist in development/improvement of spreadsheets for plant monitoring and reporting Perform process calculations for new opportunities for REG (i.e. potential plant expansions or acquisition of existing facility from another company) Participate in new safety initiatives or incident reviews and assist in implementing corrective actions as needed Perform other duties as assigned JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Education Required: 4 year bachelor’s degree –Chemical Engineering preferred. Mechanical Engineering or related degree may be considered Required coursework: Material and Energy Balances, Fluids (Flow or Dynamics), Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Controls, and advanced Chemistry with associated lab work (Organic, Analytical, or similar) **Master’s degree or Professional Engineer license is a plus Experience Required: 10-15 years in a process-related industry, preferably in refining industry, biomass-based diesel, edible oils, petroleum, petrochemical, ethanol, or other renewable fuels industries preferred Skills Required: Advanced Excel skills Strong verbal and written communication skills Extensive math and basic financial analysis abilities Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Project, Visio) Strong organization skills Strong technical background Special skills or knowledge preferred: Bluebeam Revu AutoCAD Knowledge of refining and/or biomass-based diesel production and related processes Experience with various software programs Experience with process simulations Process data historians (PI ProcessBook) 3-D modeling Office VBA Microsoft Access SQL Server experience Enterprise-level databases (JD Edwards, Maximo, SAP, etc.) is a plus REG is committed to creating a diverse environment and is an equal opportunity employer.
