POSITION PURPOSE: This position is responsible for a variety of engineering duties, including continuous improvement of current production processes, troubleshooting any of the REG plants; assist in the design of new plants and upgrades, management of small to medium size capital projects and evaluation of new technologies. This position is also expected to work within the Process Safety Management system including MOC, PSSR, P&ID, PSI, ISO and Mechanical Integrity programs. This position will be a technical expert in the process chemistry and production processes all of the REG plants. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Operating Procedures Monitor performance of plant and coordinate with operations to correct any deviation from desired performance Analyze output, operating costs, and process costs for various plant configurations to support feasibility and screening studies Participate in REG’s Management of Change program, including Pre-startup Safety Reviews. Produce process design packages including utility summaries, equipment and instrument data sheets, PFDs, Isomemetric’s and P&IDs for commercial applications Review engineering designs by outside contractors for conformance to specifications and technology Prepare presentation materials and make presentations on design elements of the process Design plant modifications to existing facilities and complete management of change (MOC) forms to initiate installation Conduct reviews in response to engineering questions relating to the process technology Assist in the creation operating procedures Monitor performance of plant and coordinate with operations to correct any deviation from desired performance Create and update operating procedures and standards Review Process Safety Information for the REG facilities, including Pressure Relief Valves and Interlock Systems. Support Function Conduct analyses to identify potential opportunities for improving operations with upgrades that enhance throughput or efficiency Prepare budget capital cost and justification for use in project planning Provide technical expertise as required in support of Research & Development department Development and Evaluation Functions Review installation of process piping and equipment to ensure all items are installed per the technical drawings Specify equipment and obtain price quotations for new or replacement projects Assist in the development and evaluation of operational manuals as necessary Assist in the development and modifications of PFD’s, P&IDs, and ISO’s. Use computer systems to set up functions, enter data, design models to simulate physical processes, and process information Assist in design review phase for construction of new plants and technology upgrades, evaluating contractor drawings such as P&ID’s, mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, architectural, and general layout Monitor contractor progress throughout the construction process including a final review of contractor work before the contractor leaves the site Coordinate with contractors to accommodate design changes made during construction Evaluate and ensure safety procedures are being followed in plant operations and encourage others to do the same Other frequent duties: Represent REG at technical conferences and events as well as training on different equipment or processes Travel to potential plant acquisition targets or technology provider facilities to perform technical due diligence Evaluate and ensure safety procedures are being followed in plant operations and encourage others to do the same Perform other duties as assigned JOB REQUIREMENTS: Be available for daily work as required Demonstrate attention to detail Ability to use office equipment (computer, copy machine, calculator, etc) Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing to provide technical expertise Manage multiple tasks simultaneously and in a timely manner to meet deadlines Disciplined self-starter with good organizational skills Possess a good working knowledge of the process equipment and systems typically used in processing fats and oils into renewable diesel, as well as the relevant quality systems and specifications such as AOCS and ASTM, respectively Work independently or with others as a team to complete assigned projects Demonstrated knowledge and experience with mass and energy balances Record data and generate computer reports and process written records on a timely basis General knowledge of building codes, design standards, and safety regulations Knowledge of design techniques, tools and principles Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology Awareness of new technical developments and ability of applying new knowledge to the processes in place at REG Possess the following competencies: Analytical Problem Solving, Cooperative Teamwork, and Initiative Provide personal contact information on an as needed basis for official business purposes JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Education Required: 4 year bachelor’s degree – Chemical Engineering, or related degree Experience Required: 0-6 years in a process-related industry, preferably in petroleum, petrochemical, biodiesel, edible oils, ethanol, or other renewable fuels industries preferred Skills Required: Advanced Excel skills Strong verbal and written communication skills Extensive math and basic financial analysis abilities Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Project, Visio) Strong organization skills Strong technical background PI, PIVision, PI Process Book (Process Information database) Special skills or knowledge preferred: Knowledge of biodiesel production and related processes Experience with various software programs including AspenPlus, Hysys or ChemCAD Process data historians Six Sigma Green or Black Belt BASIC MENTAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
