Pay: $75,000 to $95,000 DOE

SUMMARY

Read Better Be Better has grown exponentially since its inception in 2014. With the successful completion of our first 5-year strategic plan, the Board and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) are casting a bold vision for the next 5-10 years. To support our broader, community-led response to Arizona's literacy crisis, we are continuing to expand beyond one programmatic implementation to a K-12 preventative pathway. In this way, RBBB can effect systemic change to maximize its impact on 3rd grade reading efficacy. 

To support the organization's next evolution, we seek a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic, and process-minded leader with experience scaling an organization, leading an executive management team, and developing a performance culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals. The COO will provide direct support to the CEO as a thought partner and operational leader. 

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) must be a leader who is able to help others at Read Better Be Better deliver measurable, cost-effective results that make the vision a reality. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Founder and CEO of Read Better Be Better, the COO will work in alignment with the CEO to effectively manage RBBB's infrastructure, processes and human and financial resources. Combining a strong managerial skillset, relevant experience and a passion for the mission, the COO will display and inspire a calm and collaborative approach to managing various day-to-day activities and ensure that the organization can adapt to unforeseen circumstances with grace and flexibility.

  • Oversee the day-to-day business operations, planning and systems of Read Better Be Better 
  • Work with the CEO to help provide and manage the infrastructure necessary to accommodate growth in programs and services 
  • Expertly manage financial resources, including organizational budgeting, financial analysis and financial systems to ensure that RBBB can meet its mission and vision 
  • Serve as the internal leader of the organization: 
    • Coordinate the annual operations plan and budget 
    • Lead the performance management process that measures and evaluates progress against goals for the organization 
    • Provide for all staff a strong day-to-day leadership presence 
  • Nurture the values of Read Better Be Better within the organization (Be Excellent. Be Kind.) 
  • Instill a human capital development and coaching culture within Read Better Be Better; upgrade human resources functions including training, development, compensation and benefits, employee relations, performance evaluation and recruiting 
  • Develop an accounting system that provides the organization with quick access to financial information and enables strategic budgeting 
  • Analyze the current technology infrastructure and scope out the next level of information technology and financial systems that support the growth of specific programs and the organization overall 
  • Anticipate, manage and solve problems deliberately and decisively 
  • Work with the board of directors: present to the board at quarterly meetings and serve on board committees as necessary

REQUIRED SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES

  • Proven experience in successfully scaling a small-mid-sized organization to meet and preferably exceed goals 
  • High level of business acumen including successful P&L management; the ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget 
  • Exceptional capacity for managing and leading people; capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower top-notch leaders from the bottom up, lead from the top down, cultivate entrepreneurship, and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team so as to put people in a position to succeed in a fast-paced, high-impact environment 
  • Evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions with varying degrees of information through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment
  • Strategic visionary with the ability to meet and balance the vision of the CEO and Governing Board with organizational execution 
  • Strong quantitative, financial management, and planning skills; comfort with nonprofit profit and loss statements and utilizing data to inform business decisions 
  • The cultural competence to be a senior leader in an organization that values and embraces equity, diversity and inclusion

PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience with Salesforce or another CRM 
  • Functional expertise in Quickbooks and Microsoft Suite

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position operates in a professional office environment as well as various locations throughout the Greater Phoenix area.
  • The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers and filing cabinets.
