TITLE: Assistant Store Manager

Reports To: Store Manager

PRIMARY PURPOSE AND MISSION STATEMENT: ROC and its employees pledge to put customers first by:

  • Greeting customers with a friendly smile.
  • Providing quick, accurate, and courteous service.
  • Supplying a variety of products that meet high quantity, quality, and freshness standards.
  • Thanking customers for making us their hometown store.

POSITION SUMMARY: Primarily responsible for assisting the store manager with day-to-day store operations. Assists with sales, store appearance, customer service, inventory, and management of employees, within established guidelines. Leads and directs store employees and supervises their performance, especially I n the absence of the store manager. Takes initiative to improve customer service, drive store sales, and meet or exceed store goals/profitability. Maintains store appearance and product presentation to company standards. Emphasizes team efforts. Helps model and set the tone for interaction with the customers and employees. Understands how that influences the public perception of ROC.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Management / Leadership

  • Supports the store manager.
  • Assists with scheduling sufficient and trained employees to provide coverage based on store operations and customer needs.
  • Provides input to employee issues regarding performance feedback, coaching, counseling, and termination.
  • Assists with setting/modeling high expectations. Holds team accountable for individual performance and achievements. Documents and communicated goals / results.
  • Helps employees stay focused on the basics – cleanliness, knowledge of procedures and merchandise, customer service, merchandising, sales, and risk management.
  • Assists the store manager in planning for day-to-day operations, leading employees, and ensuring service to customers is quick and efficient.
  • Acts as store manager when the manager is not on the premises. Acts as an extension of the store manager.
  • Customer Service / Sales
  • Positively interacts with customers from greeting to sales transaction to exit.
  • Helps other employees with a specific customer who has questions or concerns. Ensures customer needs are met and complaints are resolved.
  • Maintains knowledge of procedures and merchandise.
  • Portrays a high energy level and personal interest in each customer. Meets the appearance and uniform standards established.
  • Models the ROC way of acknowledging and welcoming the customer.
  • Assists with managing the beverage bar, coolers, stocking, merchandising, restrooms, deli, fuel, lottery, etc.
  • Communication / Teamwork
  • Interacts with store employees to facilitate effective communication and support them during peak business hours.
  • Helps new employees integrate well into the company.
  • Works additional hours as store clerk when scheduling conflicts / staff shortages require it.
  • Participates in regular periodic management meetings, typically bi-monthly.
  • Checks in vendors as they enter the store. Acts as liaison for the company with key vendors and service providers, as needed.
  • Attends and helps lead employee meetings at the store.
  • Technology / Facilities / Equipment
  • Assists with maintenance, cleaning, and housekeeping of facilities and equipment.
  • Maintains store appearance in all areas to company standards.
  • Operates point-of-sale system and how to use data to manage the store operations, enhance customer service, and provide recurring reports.
  • Enters data into system to process invoices and other computer work.
  • Promotes the highest level of security for customers, employees, and store inventory.
  • Daily Operations / Results.
  • Assists with overseeing customer service, sales, procedures, processes, systems, cash control, and financial reporting.
  • Executes the daily operational plan and accomplishes the target tasks and deadlines established.
  • Helps maintain the store standards, both physically and financially.
  • Administers various policies, procedures, and processes established for the store.
  • Participates in keeping store facility and equipment operations running smoothly and in an organized manner.
  • Receives new inventory and ensures appropriate pricing of each item is complete prior to placing on the floor. Follows established inventory-processing guidelines.
  • Monitors signage to ensure it is placed, maintained, and changed properly.
  • Resolves operational challenges and crises as they occur.
  • Financial Administration
  • Assists store manager with accounting and financial records of the store.
  • Checks and monitors register operations and sales transactions.
  • Manages the inventory processes and procedures, impacting expenses of the store.
  • Effectively controls and manages cash (e.g. cash, credit/debit cards, money orders, lottery, phone cards) and products/inventory. Minimizes shortages.
  • Maintains financial records as directed my store manager.
  • Training and Development
  • Assists with training and orientation plan and schedule for each new employee.
  • Observes and redirects employees on appropriate way to interact with customers/general public.
  • Participates in training and cross-training of employees in every aspect of store operations.
  • Marketing and Merchandising
  • Maintains product presentation to company standards.
  • Manages inventory levels and keeps store well stocked.
  • Participates in word-of-mouth communication and advertising/marketing efforts.
  • Assists store manager with planning for store changes and events.
  • Helps with seasonal changes impacting products carried, e.g. summer items (gas cans, ice, picnic items, paper products) and winter items (kerosene cans, washer fluid, antifreeze, soups).
  • Assists the store in remaining competitive by brainstorming and participating in implementing new ideas to make to make the store the best it can be.
  • Other
  • Performs other duties as required or requested.
  • Contributes to the positive team efforts of the individual store and the company.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive individual, customer and organization data without exception.
  • Acts upon critical issues immediately within position’s authority and / or asks for assistance / decision-making from store manager.

Requirements

Knowledge and Education

  • High school graduation or equivalent, preferred.
  • Knowledge of retail management and people management, a plus.
  • Some knowledge of store operations, required – merchandising, inventory control, cash control.
  • Experience
  • One year experience in retail management, C-store clerk, or store operations position.
  • Experience and knowledge in the areas of management, financial reporting, customer service, inventory management, and other related operational areas.
  • Demonstrated effective track record as store clerk.
  • Skills and Abilities
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. Good people and customer interaction skills.
  • Skills in areas of leadership, teaching, and motivating employees.
  • Demonstrated attentiveness to details; mathematical analytical ability. Use of calculator.
  • Good computer skills, e.g. point of sale system.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively solve problems – operational, customer, and employee.
  • Ability to work independently in a high pressure and demanding environment.
  • Ability to multi-task, i.e., pick-up where left off when interrupted.
  • ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
