Number of Openings 0 Time Type Full time Job Description Talen Energy has 1 opening for an Environmental Manager, at its facilities in Pasadena, MD. Primary Purpose & Summary: Implements, reviews, evaluates, and maintains environmental protection programs such as: air, water, waste, oil, toxics, radiation, and local permitting to ensure compliance with regulatory and best sustainable practice requirements. Responsibilities: Prepares, reviews, maintains, and updates, as applicable, environmental permits, compliance reports, environmental compliance program documents, agency reports, plans, spreadsheets, files, topographical and engineering maps, laboratory sample and quality control documents, emissions formulas and factors, and other documents to satisfy compliance with regulatory, best practice requirements and operational needs. Interprets and provides technical guidance to employees and senior management, concerning compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations and best sustainable practices. Leads and supports processes to ensure that operations at the power plant and associated facilities (e.g., Lot 15) are maintained according to federal, state, and local permits, regulations and best sustainable practices in the design and implementation of activities that have environmental implications (e.g., air emissions, oil spill prevention, waste management, etc.). Coordinates and provides oversight of environmental assessments and monitoring (e.g., NPDES sampling and stack sampling) related to past, present, and future industrial operations and activities occurring at the Maryland plants. Provides direction to environmental technicians as required. Periodically audits facilities and operations for compliance with applicable regulations and sustainable best practices. Maintains associated databases and/or records. Conducts or ensures training of Company Employees in accordance with requirements of applicable standards. Participates in the development and/or revision of training and outreach materials, as well as delivery of employee training, as needed, pertaining to areas of assigned responsibility. As delegated by the Environmental Director, interacts with state and federal regulators, including preparation and submittal of permit applications, drafting of responses to agency inquiries or notices of non-compliance, and preparation and submittal of periodic reports of regulated activity. Is responsible for program management to reflect accurate regulatory interpretations and best sustainable practice requirements policies of Talen Energy, development of corrective action plans to eliminate compliance issues, and development of strategic work plans, reflecting continued and sustained program improvement. Skills/Competencies: Required: In-depth knowledge of major federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to environmental protection. High level of organizational and communication (oral and written) skills. Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities. Attention to detail. Ability to plan and implement environmental protection and compliance management plans and procedures. Basic knowledge of other EHS program areas (i.e., Occupational Safety, and Radiation Safety). Adaptability, ability to learn, commitment to excellence (Work Standards), integrity, judgment, planning skills. Computer proficient. Desired: Experience with environmental permitting and implementing compliance programs at a large power plant (CAA, NPDES, RCRA, SARA, SPCC, CERCLA, Radiation, etc.). Experience with power plant operations and/or environmental compliance activities. Certifications: Registered Environmental Manager (REM), Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or other related professional certification. Education & Experience Required: Bachelor’s degree with a major in environmental science, industrial hygiene, an engineering discipline from an ABET accredited college, or other related science. 5 years’ experience with implementation of environmental programs at a large industrial, construction, manufacturing, or mining site, with emphasis in CAA and/or NPDES program compliance. Demonstrated experience interfacing with regulatory agencies. Thorough understanding of power plant environmental issues. Licenses/Certifications Required: Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to meet Company driving standards. Physical Requirements & Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, stamina to maintain attention to detail, despite interruptions, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen for long period of time. Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. It may be necessary at times to visit power plants coal combustions byproduct landfills, or other potentially hazardous industrial locations, primarily for the purpose of evaluating compliance. At times, an individual may respond to environmental release situations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color distinction with vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Must have manual dexterity and ability to manipulate keyboards. Must be capable of wearing respirators and working in dusty environments. On occasions employee may be required to work at heights to collect samples or conduct other environmental assessment, where guarding or fall protection is required. Mental Demands: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills, read, and interpret data, information, and documents; analyze and solve complex problems, observe, and interpret situations, use math and mathematical reasoning; deal with changing, intensive deadlines, and interact with internal and external clients. Must be able to concentrate while under time constraints.
