The R&D Machine Shop Supervisor, working under direct supervision, serves as the supervising machinist and is responsible for supporting the R&D Machine Shop and the Engineering department as necessary. This role operates machine tools to produce precision parts.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate the work activity of the machine shop team members, assigning tasks to the optimal individuals and providing guidance and direction as needed.
• Evaluate the priority level of job requests to ensure efficient workflow.
• Serve as a knowledge resource for engineers and technicians.
• Provide improvement suggestions on tool and fixture designs.
• Maintain a safe and clean work environment in the machine shop.
• Operate manual machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders.
• Interpret technical drawings and required specifications for a job.
• Demonstrate expertise in producing parts using a variety of materials.
• Select tools and materials tailored to the requirements of each assigned job.
• Plan the sequence of cutting and finishing operations.
• Monitor and control feed rates and speeds and adjust as necessary.
• Utilize measurement tools such as micrometers and calipers to ensure the accuracy of dimensions throughout the machining process.
• Identify and replace cutting tools as necessary.
• Recognize the need for machine maintenance and perform minor repairs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent GED.
• Minimum five (5) years’ manual machining experience.
• Ability to transition quickly between tasks quickly.
• Adept written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate information with clarity.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and safety precautions.
• Capability to identify complex problems and review relevant information to develop and implement different solutions.
• Excellent coordination and mechanical skills, and good manual dexterity.
• Proficiency in math with analytical abilities.
• Basic computer skills.
• Working knowledge of safety protocols.

Preferred

• Completion of an apprenticeship or vocational training preferred.
