JOB SUMMARY:

Technical and analytical optical and system level lead in support of engineering activities and projects at Quantel USA. The Senior Scientist must have a strong technical understanding of all Quantel USA products, services, capabilities, markets and applications. He/she must have excellent communication, planning, problem-solving, organizational and leadership skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conducting research on new photonics related technologies and capabilities.
• Supporting the development of new products, models, mechanisms or technologies.
• Investigating and resolving technical problems involving optical performance of new and existing products.
• Managing the construction of design models, life test models and analyzing of test results.
• Planning or defining laboratory and field tests and developing new ideas based on results.
• Establishing optical and opto-mechanical specification and standards.
• Designing, building, testing and optimizing optical systems and subsystems.
• Prepare estimates of development costs.
• Generating proposals and white papers.
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent plus 5 years of applicable industry experience.
• Design experience involving solid state lasers.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills.
• Computer savvy (MS Word, Excel, applicable CAD tools, etc).
• Experience using test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power meters, beam analyzers, etc.
• Experience managing technical projects (scheduling, resource management, budgeting, establishing project priorities, etc.).
• Working knowledge of the principles of electrical, mechanical, optical and laser engineering, with expertise in one or more of the fields.
• Proven leader and communicator who works well with others in Engineering, Production, Sales, etc.
• Some travel is required: estimated to be 5%.

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience with Q-switched solid state lasers (Nd:YAG, Er:YAG, etc.).
• Knowledge of ISO-9001 or 13485, or equivalent Quality System.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be capable of working in front of a computer screen for long periods of time.
• Standing and working at optical tables in laser labs for extended periods of time.
• Good close-up vision for inspecting optics and other laser components.
• Ability to use fingers and hands to manipulate small objects.
