GENERAL JOB INFORMATION

Job Title: Senior Accountant

Reports to: Director of Finance

Location: Public Allies National Office / Virtual

Employment Classification: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Exempt 

Salary Grade: $85,000 - $106,000

JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Accountant will perform various accounting functions for Public Allies, including assisting and managing the monthend

closing process, preparing financial reports, and is responsible for proper award recognition, net asset schedules, and

audit preparation.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS & KEY OUTCOMES

  • Oversee and ensure efficiency in month-end close (bank reconciliations, journal entries for contracts)
  • Maintain award recognition processes
  • Draft and review financial reports and journal entries
  • Maintain chart of accounts and net asset schedules
  • Collaborate with Grant Managers and coordinate compliant and seamless documentation across program and finance
  • Process payroll journal entries for approval and liaise with payroll company
  • Enter invoices and contracts receivable into QuickBooks
  • Ensure accuracy in accounting and financial reports and systems
  • Interpret and communicate financial processes and reports to staff and leadership
  • Collaborate with the finance team and program staff in applying and implementing budgets
  • Assist with tracking grant expenses with an understanding of restrictions and conditional funding
  • Keep accurate records of all incoming and outgoing payments and transactions
  • Ability to analyze financial status, statements, and reports and communicates discrepancies to relevant program staff
  • Maintain financial records with strict adherence to Public Allies, local, state, federal, and grant financial regulations in collaboration with Public Allies finance department
  • Assist the finance department in reviewing daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial activities
  • Support contract paperwork and coordinating receipts
  • Maintain records, including invoices, ledgers, and receipts
  • Manage grant billing and general ledgers
  • Work alongside program staff to establish new grants and grant billing processes
  • Assist with internal and external audits
  • Assist the finance department in improving internal processes
  • Prepare state and federal regulatory filings in collaboration with the finance department

Requirements

EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

  • Prior experience (4 years) as an accounting specialist, senior accountant, controller or similar role
  • Understanding of accounting and financial principles in a non-profit
  • Strong and demonstrated knowledge of GAAP
  • Ability to research and problem solve
  • Experience utilizing various payroll and accounting systems
  • Knowledge of accounting, tax compliance, and ability to conduct financial benchmarking
  • Understanding of fiscal management principles and process
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal and multiple state tax laws and regulations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Highly organized, ability to think strategically, attentive to detail, a forward thinker and planner
