Director of Media Relations

Founded as CFED in 1979, Prosperity Now recently underwent a strategic planning process to refresh its vision, brand, position, and programming model.
About Communications Operations at Prosperity Now
The Communications Department maintains Prosperity Now’s brand and works to tell the organization’s stories, using traditional, social, digital, and visual means to achieve campaign objectives. The Communications Department encompasses press and traditional media, web and social media, and graphics and multimedia. We develop communications strategies for the Prosperity Now’s mission, work and individual campaigns. Working closely with internal colleagues, we craft messaging and create visuals that help audiences understand racial and economic justice issues that impact people in this country.
The Director of Media Relations advises on, directs and implements both long-term strategy and rapid response to generate media coverage to help advance Prosperity Now’s mission and build the organization’s profile. The Director of Media Relations elevates our organizational story and positioning through increased media mentions and interviews with leadership and subject matter experts. The Director initiates high-quality media coverage that raises broad awareness, complements overall communications strategy and reaches target audiences and geographies. The Director of Media Relations builds and maintains strong relationships with members of the media in order to strengthen our position as a trusted, go-to source on record or on background. The Director of Media Relations will supervise and provide mentorship to a media associate.
Accountability: The Director of Media Relations reports to the Vice President of Communications.
Responsibilities:
Leadership
  • Participate in the implementation of organizational initiatives and strategies.
  • Direct and oversee the business of the team’s portfolio through effective leadership and management of strong internal and external relationships, quality control, marketing, and responsible fiscal management.
  • Participate in the development of team strategic plans, goals, and objectives, ensuring alignment with those of the organization.
  • Ensure strong and open communications channels between team members and across the organization, including the appropriate dissemination of information to staff as needed.
  • Active member of the Directors Council, informing the organization’s strategic direction and decision making.
  • Proactively bring ideas to the Council and to leadership on how to amplify progress toward organizational goals.
Team Management and Development
  • Provide support and guidance to team members, including communicating team goals and emphasizing the organization’s guiding principles.
  • Develop and implement a system to evaluate and address the skill, experience and professional development needs of team members.
  • Ensure and promote the development of team succession planning through coaching, training, and leadership development.
  • Work with team members to develop objective performance measurements across all projects to ensure consistent, high-quality goal setting and fair evaluation metrics.
  • Instill a sense of accountability among team members by modeling close oversight of individual and organizational performance standards.
  • Actively seek to resolve any team concerns while adhering to the organizational policies and standards of behavior.
  • Oversee the training and orientation of all department team members.
  • Conduct team meetings to update staff on best practices and expectations.
  • Create and manage timelines to ensure all deadlines are met.
Portfolio Management
  • Craft, direct and implement a highly responsive and proactive annual media relations strategy.
  • Secure media coverage to support and advance Prosperity Now’s organizational goals.
  • Establish and manage internal procedures, protocols and quality controls for maintaining a best in class. media list, distribution, briefing organizational spokespersons and organizational media relations
  • Develop comprehensive, multifaceted communications strategies for the organization and individual campaigns.
  • Oversee the development and writing of news releases, blogs, statements, messaging, talking points, press releases, pitches, blogs, opinion pieces, writing and editing for consistency, clarity and relevance.
  • Build and maintain a list of media contacts, with specific focus on building relationships with journalists of color and those who cover racial and economic justice and related issues.
  • Grow and cultivate media lists through outreach to journalists.
  • Pitch stories to journalists using persuasive writing and speaking skills, match our stories to journalists’ needs and topics of the day.
  • Leverage social media to promote content, find journalists and pitch stories.
  • Generate regular, strategic, high-quality media coverage of Prosperity Now initiatives through sophisticated and creative proactive and reactive media work.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key journalists in the print, broadcast and digital media.
  • Organize and oversee the quality and impact of our press events.
  • Create coordinate media strategies to ensure alignment with communications plan and priorities that expands public profile and impact.
  • Seek, arrange, and facilitate media interviews for spokespeople and oversee the regular training of staff.
  • Work closely with digital communications to brainstorm and implement creative, multi-platform offerings.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and draw conclusions on impact of media work and prepare regular evaluation reports.
  • Create and implement media strategies for campaigns and rapid response opportunities.
  • Serve as a point of contact for journalists, fielding inquiries and ensuring a timely response.
  • Stay abreast of professional standards, trends and issues affecting this set of responsibilities, demonstrating continuous learning of the field.
  • Participate in the management and stewardship of the department budget.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Educational background in communications, media relations, public relations or closely related area of study; or at least ten years of relevant work experience
  • At least six years of experience leading and setting strategy for a multi-person team, preferably in a field related to racial wealth equity, community development or poverty alleviation.
  • Imaginative, original, and innovative thought leader with a proven record of producing and executing targeted and broad media strategies
  • Prior experience working in an environment with ever-changing timelines, requests, deliverables, tight deadlines and budgets
  • Experience building relationships across organizations and coalitions and with the media
  • Concise communicator who can advocate for causes and translate complex topics for specific and broad audiences
  • Strong writing and copy-editing skills
  • Have existing relationships with journalists covering relevant issue areas and experience pitching
  • Cultural competency and experience with diverse stakeholders and audiences
  • Ability to be flexible with work hours during rapid response moments
Salary Range: $130,000 - $145,000
FLSA Status: Exempt
Physical Requirements: Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time as well as intermittently throughout workday.
