The Presbyterian Church of La Porte (PCLP) is a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA), which has approximately 10,000 congregations nationwide. PCLP is located on the south side of the city of La Porte, Indiana. We are a joyful community, gathered together by God to call all people to a deep relationship with Jesus Christ and to express Christ’s compassion in our community and in the world. We seek a creative, personable, and organized individual to serve as our next Bookkeeper. This position is an integral part of the ministries of
PCLP.

Position: Bookkeeper

Reports to: Pastor/Head of Staff

Purpose: The bookkeeper will provide accounting services to support the mission of the church.

Relationships: Administrative Elder, Stewardship and Finance Ministry Team, & Foundation

Responsibilities:
The following duties shall be performed on the schedule as needed: daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually:

1. Record memorial giving.
2. Backup church financial database on the schedule established by Finance/Stewardship Team.
3. Prepare payroll and accounts payable for processing and posting.
4. Prepare and file the 941 deposit before the 15th of the month.
5. Prepare the 941 quarterly report.
6. Make the online Indiana withholding tax deposit before the 15th of the month.
7. Ensure that all Mission and Per Capita monies due are sent to Presbytery on a timely basis.
8. Reconcile the bank statement. Church Treasurer will validate reconciliation prior to releasing financial statements to Session.
9. Prepare the church Income/Expense report, the Balance Sheet, the various fund activity reports, the Financial Statements for Foundation, including account activity, for each
Finance/Stewardship Team meeting.

10. Attend Finance / Stewardship Ministry Team meetings as requested.
11. Work with the Leader of Annual Stewardship campaign in producing needed financial information and entering pledge information.
12. Prepare monthly and ad hoc financial reports as requested by elders in their analysis of their spending budgets.
13. Provide quarterly update to appropriate personnel regarding the status of pledge commitments.
14. Access Board of Pensions information, other church financial reading materials, attend
Presbyterian financial training as requested, and provide recommendations on changes to the church's financial processing.
15. Maintain appropriate historical files for annual audit and traditional financial audit requirements. Provide responses to the Finance/Stewardship Team regarding any
Annual Audit concerns and issues.
16. Attend staff meetings when requested.
17. Prepare quarterly contribution reports for members of the congregation.
18. Perform other duties as requested and/or approved by Pastor/Head of Staff in conjunction with the Administrative elder.
19. Assure that all Financial Policies and Procedures are current.
20. Immediately report (notify) Treasurer AND Head of Staff of any financial situation that is inconsistent or suspicious in nature.
21. Meet regularly (one-on-one) with Treasurer at least quarterly and Head of Staff at least monthly for update and review.

The following tasks shall be performed as a part of Year-end accounting functions:
22. Input budget figures and prepare budget reports.
23. Post pledges.
24. Prepare year-end payroll reports: W2's & 1099 due by the end of January (IRS deadline), W3, W3H & 1096 due by in March/April (IRS deadline).
26. Prepare year-end financial reports for Session and annual report.
26. Prepare annual contribution reports for all giving to the church, due by end of January

(IRS deadline).
27. Perform year-end functions for church data base software.
28. Update payroll tax tables and software.
29. File property Tax forms (due in May).
30. File Business Entity forms and not-for-profit tax forms (due in September).

Education: High School graduate with minimum two years of bookkeeping/ accounting experience, prefer advanced educational training in accounting.

Experience/Training: Experience with Microsoft Suite, Internet, and office equipment are required. Must have the confidence and ability to learn Church accounting and membership database system with minimum outside assistance. Experience with PowerChurch accounting system is a plus.

Other requirements: Knowledge of how a church functions. Good organization skills. Have the personality to effectively interact with the public and members of the congregation. Exercise professionalism, and discretion to keep confidential matters confidential. Personal attire should reflect professionalism for a church office setting. Must pass a criminal background check which includes a credit check.

Schedule of Work Hours: Flexible 5-10 hours a week, to be determined with Pastor/Head of Staff.

Compensation
$25.00 - $30.00 per hour (commensurate with experience)

Relationships: The Bookkeeper reports to the Pastor/Head of Staff with accountability to and recourse through the Personnel Ministry Team Elder.

Please Note: The church is also searching for an Office & Communications Administrator. The position of Office & Communications Administrator is also a part-time position. The Personnel Committee would be gratified if we could locate one person who could provide Office and Communications Administration services as well as the services listed above.
