The Portage County Health Care Center, located in Stevens Point, WI, is seeking a Director of Nursing!

The Health Care Center’s mission is to provide quality, individualized, cost effective, residential, and rehabilitative services for elderly and adult clients with short and long-term care needs.

The Director of Nursing Services (DON) is accountable for creating a team within the department that will distinguish itself within this facility and the industry as delivering excellent client-based services and resident/family satisfaction. In this role, the DON will budget, plan, organize, develop and direct the overall operations of the Nursing Service Department. 

What are some of the essential duties and job responsibilities?

Administrative:

  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate and direct the Nursing Service Department in accordance with current rules, regulations and guidelines that govern this long-term care facility.
  • Develop, maintain and annually update and review written policies and procedures that govern the daily function of the nursing department.
  • Assumes responsibility for Standards of Care & Practice set for the facility.
  • Make written/oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator as necessary/required, concerning the operation of Nursing Services in the facility.
  • Develop and maintain the Quality Assurance Program within the Department of Nursing.
  • Participate in surveys (inspections) made by the state.
  • Assumes 24 hours accountability for Nursing Department and delegates a responsible staff member to act on your behalf when absent from the facility

Committee Functions: 

  • Participates on various committees of the facility (i.e., Infection Control, Safety, Quality Assurance, Medicare, Behavior, QAPI, etc.)

Nursing Care Functions:

  • Participate in selection of residents (or delegates function) for admission to the facility in cooperation with the facility Social Worker or designee.
  • Provide the Administrator with information relative to nursing needs of the residents and the department’s ability to deliver those services.

Personnel Functions:

  • Assist in the recruitment and selection of personnel assigned to your area of responsibility.
  • Determine departmental staffing needs necessary to meet the various departments’ schedules and assign a sufficient number of personnel for each tour of duty.
  • Counsel, coach and discipline personnel as necessary and in accordance to County polices and guidance from Administrator and Human Resources Department.

Staff Development: 

  • Develop and participate in the planning, conducting, and scheduling of timely in-service training for the nursing staff. Ensure that these programs meet the continuing education requirements which allow licensed personnel (e.g. RNs, LPNs, CNAs, etc.) to keep their licenses on an active status.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain an effective orientation program that orients the new employee to the facility, its policies and procedures, and to his/her job position and duties.

Budget & Planning:

  • Assist in preparing, planning and developing the Department’s budget and submit to the Administrator for review, recommendations and approval.

What are the minimum qualifications?

  • Associate degree in nursing, bachelor’s preferred.
  • Registration as a nurse in the State of Wisconsin.
  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a supervisor in a long-term care facility, hospital, or other related health care facility.
  • Long term care nursing experience preferred.
  • Ability to successfully pass a caregiver background check and must maintain status to be present with and/or work with populations covered under the Caregiver Background Check Law.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to insured vehicle for work-related travel.
