Pet Supplies Plus is Hiring a Tax Manager Near Livonia, MI

Overview

Responsibilities/Qualifications

The Tax Manager will lead all tax activities for Pet Supplies Plus. This position has broad reach interfacing with all levels of staff and leaders across the organization, including senior leadership. Cross functional collaboration is expected as we work to solve problems and drive improvements and efficiencies throughout the Company.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Tax Compliance (50%)

  • Manage and review work product of direct reports for full range of sales/use tax processing
  • Manage tax controversy matters with jurisdictions to acceptable outcomes
  • Interface with third party Personal Property Tax service provider reviewing returns and invoices
  • Manage legal entity qualification matters interfacing with third party Registered Agent service provider
  • Conduct research on all indirect tax matters to support accounting and operational activities
  • Prepare activity-based/non-income based state and local tax returns
  • Interface with parent company tax team on ad hoc data requests

Accounting/Operational Support (10%)

  • Establish tax related accounting transactions
  • Prepare and review tax-based GL account reconciliations as needed
  • Oversee and manage jurisdictional based operational Licensing portfolio

Decision/Customer Support (20%)

  • Monitor changing tax laws in existing and new locations. Advise internal partners and advocate for changes as appropriate
  • Research and troubleshoot tax matters and questions as they arise from internal partners and external sources, including a broad franchisee partner base

Special Projects/Process Improvements (20%)

  • Drive process improvements with the execution and compliance of sales/use tax processes using existing and emerging technologies
  • Monitor and advise on tax incentive opportunities and compliance
  • Other responsibilities and projects as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors’ degree in Finance or Accounting is required; Master’s degree with a Tax concentration is preferred.
  • 5-7 years of multi-jurisdiction state and local tax experience encompassing income, personal property, and sales/use taxes.
  • Omni-channel retail experience is preferred.
  • Experience interacting directly with multiple jurisdictions and managing controversy interfaces.
  • Experience with tax research platforms such as Thomson CheckPoint.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) to express complex ideas in simple terms
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills as well as a keen attention to detail; ability to manage projects with varying lengths and timelines
  • Ability to build relationships cross-functionally to drive attainment of goals and objectives
  • Experience with ERP systems and proficient in Microsoft Office applications
