Shift- Day; Weekend Option

POSITION SUMMARY

Employee shows a commitment to moral values, integrity and character by respecting the beliefs and worth of others. Under direct supervision of the Med Surg Nurse Manager, the Charge Nurse will demonstrate effective communication within a multi-level organization. Responsible for managing, supervising, and assisting the nursing staff, as well as providing administrative support and patient care. The Charge Nurse will also manage and report on nursing regulatory requirements as well as oversee admissions once they have been accepted by admitting physician.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Rounds on patients and analyzes obtained information to develop appropriate interventions to prevent decline; record signs of change in condition, decline in ambulation, development of skin breakdown and other changes
  2. Assist in monitoring and reporting quality and regulatory requirements as set by the nurse manager or administration. For example, but not limited to: Flu immunization and DVT screenings, 4 eye assessments completed, wound care pictures are taken and properly documented, pain reassessment, education properly assessed and given to patient, etc.
  3. Demonstrate competency when placing patients based on isolation needs, sex and age of patient, high risk patients near desk (if possible)
  4. Effective communicator within and across multiple departments. Facilitate information in patient care conferences/huddles in a productive and timely manner. Serves in a security capacity when the guard and Maintenance Staff are not present
  5. Consistently addresses conflicts, employee issues or concerns, and effectively counsels staff and reports feedback to Med Surg Nurse manager. Mentoring and training new staff and provide support and guidance to all staff members. Supervisory responsibility: RNs, LPNs, aides, US of the Med Surg floor
  6. Can and will actively transition to the team lead role when necessary and/or as needed. In the event of a nurse call in and or nursing shortage; he or she may make the decision to call for additional staff. At the time that the charge nurse transitions into a team lead this position will continue to with the above 5 key roles.
  7. Completes shift report thoroughly with key components to oncoming charge nurse and hospitalist. Shift updates to be emailed or communicated to hospitalist per their preferred method prior to start of new shift
  8. Supports the Med Surg nurse manager and Administration in leading a culture with a “can do” attitude
  9. Responds to emergencies; assess the patient’s condition; decides on medical attention patient needs
  10. Assists as requested with the review and development of policy and procedures and following JC and CMS standards
  11. Participates in clarifying medical information to patient, family, and staff. Interprets and implements physician orders
  12. Ensures efficient intake of newly admitted patients to the medical floor. This may include receiving patients from ED or Surgery, initial assessments and/or medication reconciliation
  13. Provides intense emotional psychological support for patients/family/staff. Participates in health care teaching following standard of care
  14. Can perform all skills and procedures for the med surg area with little direction
  15. Works with leadership to investigate, understand, and minimize readmissions to the med surg floor
  16. Assist in electronic order entry of patient care needs when primary nurse needs assistance
  17. Work with IT to problem solve areas of concern with the EMR, assist in development of more effective flow charts, e-forms, etc.
  18. Able to access and utilize the EMR clinical documentation systems in house
  19. Assist in the 24-hour staffing and scheduling process
  20. Complete annual training and show competency on setting up the surgery area for emergency C Sections if not able to be done by the Supervisor
  21. Complete annual training and show competency for in house pharmacy use after hours
  22. Manages the operations of the Med Surg floor in a patient-centered but highly effective manner with little outside supervision on their specific shift

Requirements

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

Current MO RN License with minimum of 3 years of experience, excellent communication skills, critical thinking, command of EMR, possesses skills of team builder on Med Surg/SWB is preferred. BLS/ACLS required for this position.

As of March 14, 2022, as a condition of employment, all US-based employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless a medical or religious exemption is approved.
