Main Job Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a nine-member accounting team
  • Maintain accounting and financial reporting systems 
  • Manage the monthly closing process including general ledger account review and reconciliation 
  • Publish financial statements for the leadership team, store directors, board, and external parties 
  • Calculate and report financial covenant ratios for bank credit facility compliance 
  • Oversee the timely submission of all federal, state and local tax filings 
  • Prepare and review supporting workpapers to external auditors for interim and year-end audit engagements 
  • Share banking, treasury and insurance responsibilities with CFO and other co-op team members 
  • Support and work closely with internal FP&A and payroll teams 
  • Calculate monthly employee benefit, medical, and dental liabilities 
  • Oversee lease accounting for the co-op 
  • Establish, review and maintain internal controls
  • Stay current on generally accepted accounting principles, federal, state and local laws and regulations 
  • Develop and train the accounting team to meet future needs of the co-op 
  • Be knowledgeable of member patronage accounting issues for book and tax 
  • Review internal policies and procedures, implementing best practices 
  • Other duties, as assigned 

Reporting Relationships: 

  • Reports to: Chief Financial Officer 
  • Supervises: Senior Accountant, Accounts Payable Supervisor 
  • Key Partners: Leadership Team, Store Directors, Office Departments, Financial Planning & Analysis, and Payroll Teams

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and licensed as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required
  • 10 years of progressive finance and accounting experience 
  • 3 years of experience leading and managing an accounting team 
  • Direct experience with ERP systems, preferably Microsoft Dynamics 365
  • Deep domain knowledge of accounting operations/functionality and US GAAP 
  • Expert knowledge of financial controls and compliance and working knowledge of tax rules and theories, treasury operations and cash management systems and processes 
  • Demonstrated skills in establishing and managing relationships with external entities, such as audit and tax partners, financial institutions, and relevant industry associations 
  • Strong people management skills with the ability to inspire, mentor, develop, coach, and ensure effectiveness 
  • Proven strategic thinker in a business setting of a medium to large, mission-focused, for-profit company 
  • Demonstrated track record of influence with direct team members, peers and senior leaders 
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills and ability, remotely and in-person 
  • Ability to work remotely and in-person, at the co-op office 2-3 days/week
  • Multi-location and retail industry experience preferred 
  • Public accounting experience preferred
