POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Program Director or designee, and in collaboration with a psychiatrist, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides independent psychiatric care and in autonomous collaboration with other healthcare professionals in psychiatric clinical settings to a specified population consumers. Ensures proper mental health treatment including psychiatric evaluation, differential diagnosing, and psychiatric medication management. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Provides consultation to other clinical staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adheres to guidelines and procedures contained in the Nurse Practitioners Manual of Pacific Clinics.
  • Obtains consumers' histories.
  • Provides psychiatric assessment, evaluation, and medication management following established County guidelines.
  • Furnishes prescription medications and monitor medication compliance for assigned caseload individually.
  • Reviews lab results by end of day of receipt and sign/date.
  • Assesses for co-occurring substance abuse disorders and make appropriate plans of action including educating the consumer / family about the effects of using substances.
  • Assesses for medical illness and refer or consult with primary care physician.
  • Provides education to consumers and families on prescribed medications to assure medication adherence.
  • Consults/serves as a resource for other treatment staff on psychopharmacology and medical aspects of consumer care.
  • Actively collaborates with other treatment staff, including psychiatrists; NPs; vocational nurses/psychiatric technicians: licensed clinical staff: and case managers, as appropriate, regarding medication issues to ensure quality of care.
  • Collaborates with assigned psychiatrist for complex cases and other required CA furnishing collaboration.
  • Follows Medi-Cal regulations for accessing and utilizing Pacific Clinics' medication room.
  • Documents consumer's medication status in a medication record format according to Pacific Clinics' charting procedures.
  • Provides appropriate documentation and testimony regarding consumer's court-related needs such as conservatorship hearings or JV-220.
  • Works on a multicultural team sensitive to the cultural and linguistic needs of the clients and families served.
  • Completes billing expectations per agency requirements and provide services consistent with program needs
  • Attends and participate in staff meetings to provide input towards program development and staff training.
  • Attends Disposition meetings to provide quality of care to consumers and families in addition to other meetings as requested.
  • Interacts with other internal programs, clinical/support staff and external sources such as school, PCP, or community personnel as applicable.
  • Models Pacific Clinics' approach, mission and core values in all communication and correspondence.
  • Communicates effectively in a culturally competent and diverse consumer population and promote favorable interaction with managers, co-workers and others.
  • Precepts NP interns guided by the University's curriculum in regard to assessment, formulating a diagnosis and medication management.
  • Drives own vehicle on Pacific Clinics' business, as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS/INTERACTION:

Initiate and maintain professional interactions and communication with Clinic's employees and/or others.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE/POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Certified Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry with minimum two-years' psychiatric experience.
  • Active registration and good standing with the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Preparation in a program conforming to the Board of Registered Nursing Standards and a current State of California issued Nurse Practitioner certificate.
  • Possession and maintenance of current CA BRN certification, NPI, furnishing number, and DEA number.
  • Possession and maintenance of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (Across the Lifespan) Certification.
  • Demonstrated strong clinical judgment and communication skills working with consumers, family members, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in Windows environment (including Word and Excel).
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience in psychiatric assessment, medication education, management and administration of medications prescribed in a community mental health setting is preferred.
  • Attainment of clinical competency utilizing approved standardized procedures as directed in the NP manual is preferred.
  • Must pass Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), background clearance.
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license and maintain an insurable driving record under the Clinics' liability policy.
