Osceola County is Hiring a Maintenance Worker Near Kissimmee, FL

Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform general maintenance, grounds keeping and custodial work in the assigned functional area. Employees in this classification function at entry level, and are responsible for accomplishing a daily routine of general and preventative facilities and infrastructure maintenance and repair tasks to provide employees and general public with an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient public buildings, roadways, and grounds. Employee has knowledge and proficiency gained through training and experience. Performs related work as directed.

  • Performs custodial tasks, e.g., emptying and cleaning waste receptacles; washing windows; dusting and polishing furniture; cleaning vents, air filters, fans, walls; changing light bulbs.
  • Performs a variety of grounds maintenance tasks, e.g., edging, mowing, trimming, waste and litter removal, fertilizing, placing sod, raking, planting; may utilize various herbicides or pesticides.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs on facilities, structures, equipment, sidewalks, drainage and other County property in one or more of the skilled and semi-skilled disciplines, e.g., plumbing, masonry, carpentry, flooring, irrigation, electric.
  • May operate a wide variety of light equipment and machinery, e.g., automobile, pick up truck, fork lift, tractor, lawn mower.
  • May utilize a wide variety of manual, gas and electric powered hand tools, e.g., hammer, shovel, rake, screw drivers, wrenches, digging bar, chainsaw, chemical sprayer leaf blowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, edger.
  • Position performs a variety of labor intensive work which may include exposure to difficult working conditions, e.g., extreme heat or cold, fumes, chemicals.
  • Performs general maintenance and upkeep of tools, equipment and machinery, e.g., lubricates, services and fuels; performs routine light maintenance and repairs; cleans and maintains safe operation.
  • Attends safety meetings and/or participates in safety inspections. Participates in the construction, renovation and restoration of streets, bridges, solid waste, utility systems and public works landscapes and grounds.
  • Performs maintenance duties such as asphalt repairs, sandbag/headwall repairs, sod installation, etc.
  • Participates in work-site safety set-up, e.g., preps work areas; sets barricades and cones; conducts traffic control in accordance with uniform work zone safety standards; flags traffic.
  • Participates in the set-up and removal of tables, chairs, stages etc. for daily meetings and classes.
  • Responds to emergency situations in order to confine, resolve or prevent injurious or otherwise hazardous conditions, i.e., fallen debris, spills, broken windows, broken locks.
  • Organizes and maintains inventory of maintenance supplies and tools. Performs duties as assigned and necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.
 
  • High School Diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to operate manual and power tools safely.
  • Eagerness to learn and grow within the County.
  • Reliability and good attendance
Miscellaneous: Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to adhere to prescribed routines and practices.
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize materials, methods and equipment used in lawn care and general maintenance work.
  • Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion.
  • Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic.
  • Ability to climb, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, sit and stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 12 feet and perform physically demanding manual labor.
  • Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass and various chemicals.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with department management, County employees, and the general public.
Physical Demand: Heavy
  • 100 lbs. maximum lifting
  • Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Expression or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
  • Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others.
  • Physical demand requirements are in excess of medium work.
