Oregon Health & Science University is Hiring a Nurse Educator Near Portland, OR

Department Overview

This position is part of the Clinical Education (CE) team, which is a section of Human Resources. CE is dedicated to facilitating education, training, staff development and competency assessment across the OHSU clinical enterprise. Educational offerings support the organization in meeting its strategic goals related to clinical quality, safety, service, and employee engagement.

This position is responsible for positively influencing the quality of patient care by partnering with colleagues to identify educational needs and to develop appropriate methodologies to ensure employee knowledge/competency within the OHSU Clinical Enterprise. The Nurse Educator will utilize adult learning principles and an educational design process to serve as an expert educator, consultant and project manager. The Nurse Educator also employs the Professional Practice Model, transferring knowledge to others as a Scientist, Practitioner and Leader

Function/Duties of Position

Education, Training and Competency Assessment

  • Program development including but not limited to: creating clinical and technical tools, job aids, eLearning content and handouts for select course offerings and programs including Nursing Continuing Professional Development, leadership and development workshops, Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Incorporate knowledge of adult learning theory, ensuring that training materials meet instructional objectives and quality standards. 
  • Plan and implement courses in collaboration with Clinical Education team, along with unit/clinic/department Managers
  • Develop and administer competency assessments, when applicable, and analyze the results, continually improving training. 
  • Document training completion in an approved system. 
  • Contribute education and training materials to the Clinical Education web site. 
  • Act as Nurse Planner in the development of course content with requestor seeking Nursing Continuing Professional Development contact hours. 
  • Create, administer, and review course evaluations that assess course effectiveness, using the Kirkpatrick model.
  • Ensure Clinical Education programs are learner-centered and apply adult learning principles.

Committee and Project Participation

  • Represents the Clinical Education team, Learning and Development, and the Human Resources department on appointed interdisciplinary and nursing committees, serving as an education consultant to ensure that identified staff learning needs are addressed. 
  • Participate or lead select projects aimed at improving quality, safety, service and professional development within the OHSU Clinical Enterprise
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor of Science Nursing, Master of Science Nursing
  • Licensure: Valid OR RN License, BLS certification
  • Experience:
  • Strong clinical experience, including knowledge of clinical quality, safety and infection control principles. 
  • Teaching or training experience in a healthcare setting. 
  • Project planning experience. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with diverse groups. 
  • Experience using an electronic health record. 
  • Experience with interdisciplinary collaboration. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Dynamic presentation style – able to engage and educate a diverse audience. 
  • Commitment to providing exceptional customer service. 
  • Self-directed team player – able to identify issues and engage in creative problem-solving. 
  • Strong organizational and planning skills - attention to detail when developing, reviewing or editing documents. 
  • Ability to create, translate and facilitate case-based learning scenarios. 
  • Strong facilitation and conflict resolution skills. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education: Master of Science degree in Nursing Education (MSN-Ed)
  • Certified in Nursing Professional Development
  • Experience:Telecommuting workforce
  • E-learning development (as part of a team)
  • Experience with Excel
  • Experience with SmartSheet
  • BLS instructor certification
