Oregon Health & Science University is Hiring a Lab Manager Near Portland, OR

Department Overview

The Lab Manager will order and maintain lab equipment and supplies and manage all lab licenses, inventories, and protocols, including IACUC and IBC. The Lab Manager will train new users of laboratory equipment, maintain equipment service contracts, manage IT interactions for computers, and arrange demos of new equipment. The Lab Manager will help craft and enforce laboratory policies for ordering, inventory, safety, usage, housekeeping, cell culture, etc.

The Lab Manager will also manage and execute the laboratory’s murine and human biospecimen studies and in vitro studies, providing continuity and longevity across projects. Work with live animals is not required. The position requires demonstrated expertise with tissue processing, histology, histochemistry, immunofluorescence, in situ hybridization, as well as cell and organ culture work including lentivirus preparation, molecular cloning, transduction, development of reporter cell line, and culture of primary cells and tissues, to train and provide technical support to lab members. The position requires expertise in common cell and molecular biology techniques, including cell and tissue processing, tissue dissociation, DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, Western blotting, ELISAs, and gel electrophoresis. The candidate must possess exceptional organizational skills and a detail-oriented management style. An ability to work independently on human and murine biospecimen and in vitro studies, as well as collaboratively, and to train and supervise entry-level staff, students, and interns is required. 

Function/Duties of Position

  • Manage lab ordering and inventories, including chemical, reagent, and biospecimen inventories. 

  • Manage and execute human correlative studies and in vitro studies and assist researchers with bench-top experiments.

  • Manage lab licenses and protocols, including IACUC and IBC. 

  • Maintain equipment and facilities: preventative maintenance, service contracts, demos, inspections. 

  • Facilitate IT interactions for lab computers and servers. 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field AND 3 years in a related technician/research position AND 2 years of supervisory, lead, or coordination experience.

  • 5 years prior life sciences laboratory experience.

  • Demonstrated competence in analysis of biological pathways using human and/or murine biospecimens (histology, ELISA, preparation of samples for advanced omics analysis) and complementary studies using in vitro systems including genetic manipulation of primary cells, tissues, and cell lines. Ability to train staff, students, and interns in these methods.

  • Ability to design, execute, troubleshoot and interpret experiments related to biospecimen analysis and generation of reporter cell lines.

  • Ability to master OHSU specific administrative systems for laboratory functions including IACUC, IRB, IBC, ordering, compliance, etc.

  • Ability to organize the laboratory records and inventory.

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively. Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Human resource duties including conducting annual and semi-annual meetings with technical staff to discuss goals and aspirations, conducting annual review with lab staff, writing job descriptions, interviewing potential technician candidates, assisting lab staff with lab duties, making sure to be involved with lab staff well being.

  • Benchtop work duties including making reagents and buffers, processing tissues, FFPE, embedding, sectioning, DNA/RNA isolation.

  • Regular and reliable attendance

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years life sciences laboratory experience plus 3 years experience in a laboratory management position.

Additional Details

  • Monday-Friday 8:30-5:00. Work is generally 40 hours per week during normal working hours, however, some evening and weekend work will be necessary. Additional safety training may be required to work with cell lines/ infectious bacteria or viruses/ working with in a BSL-2 environment.
  • Personnel will be sitting at times but often will be moving from place to place for long periods of time. Some standing required—for up to 4 hours at a time. Ability to perform lab manipulations, move and carry lab equipment under 25 lbs, perform image analysis operation and help others with equipment use. Personal protective equipment must be worn as required. (Gloves, mask/respirator, eyewear, lab coat, etc).
