Oregon Health & Science University is Hiring a Data Engineer Near Portland, OR

Department Overview

The Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine provides expert care for patients with lung diseases in our pulmonary clinics, allergic and immunologic disorders and diseases in our allergy clinics, and critically ill patients in our intensive care units. In addition to our commitment to outstanding clinical care, we are proud of our extensive research programs, from basic science to clinical trials. Our educational mission includes teaching on many levels, including our two fellowship programs in Pulmonary Critical Care and Critical Care Medicine.

Alongside the Principal Investigators, the Data Engineer will construct and maintain systems to collect, validate, manage, and convert raw data (of many types) into organized and usable information for subsequent analysis by the Investigators and lab team. These databases will be built from the ground up for interoperability and machine learning tasks, and will include clinical (i.e., electronic health record and hand-curated), operational, and administrative data.

Function/Duties of Position

  • Assist in the creation, management, and integration of systematic automated data feeds from disparate clinical, operational, and administrative data sources via SQL or similar relational database management languages.
  • Develop automated data management pipelines, including data extraction, cleaning, quality control, and construction of derivative features based on raw data. This responsibility may include the development of methods or distributable packages.
  • Identify, define, direct, and perform project issue analysis to resolve challenges, including analysis of technical and economic feasibility of proposed data solution.
  • Communicate highly technical information to numerous audiences, including Principal Investigator(s), research collaborators, and less-experienced staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent of a Master’s degree in statistics, computer science, or a related field AND 3 years of relevant experience OR Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field AND 5 years of relevant experience OR 7 years of relevant experience OR Equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Proficiency with relational databases and SQL.
  • Expertise in at least one high-level programming language (i.e., R, Python, Julia, or Ruby; R preferred).
  • Demonstrated skill in designing and executing data analysis pipelines including data collection, processing, and developing summary reports.
  • Demonstrated organization skills.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and experience working within healthcare systems.
  • Experience with electronic health record data (Epic preferred).
  • Experience with OMOP data model.
  • Experience with both SQL and noSQL database designs.
  • Three to five years of related experience.

Additional Details

  • Primary duties are Monday-Friday between 8:00am and 5:00pm. Rarely, evening or weekend assignments may occur.
  • The position may be a combination of on-campus and remote work.
  • Continuous use of computer keyboards and phones is required.
  • Ability to travel to all the division’s offices spaces and clinical sites is required.
  • Ability to stand or sit for up to 8 hours per day is required.
